Historical Description

Ebchester, a small irregular village, on the river Derwent, situated about five miles to the south of Ryton, and 271 from London, is supposed, from the number of antiquities which have been discovered, to have been a considerable Roman station ; its name, says Camden, is derived from Ebba, a virgin of the blood-royal of Northumberland, who founded a monastery here about the year 630.— The great Roman road, which led to this station from the southward, is in some places remarkably perfect; it is formed in three distinct parts, with four ditches ; a centre road, probably for carriages and cavalry, 42 feet in breadth, with a narrow road on each side, for foot passengers, 12 feet wide.— Ebchester is situated in Chester Ward, and contains 48 houses, and 200 inhabitants.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

EBCHESTER is a township, village and ecclesiastical parish taken out of the parish of Lanchester, and situated on the road from Shotley Bridge to Newcastle and Gateshead, and on the river Derwent, which separates it from Northumberland, 287 miles from London and 12 south-west from Newcastle, in the North Western division of the county, west division of Chester ward, Lanchester union, county court district of Consett, Consett petty sessional division, rural deanery of Ryton and archdeaconry and diocese of Durham. The village is situated on the old Watling Street, and many Roman remains are visible. There is a station on the Consett branch of the North Eastern railway, about half a mile south-east. The church of St. Ebba is an ancient building of stone in the mixed styles, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and has 2 bells: the lower part of the north wall of the chancel exhibits masonry of cyclopean character, and is within the site of the walls of the Roman station here: in 1882 a stained memorial window to Mrs. Surtees, of Hamsterley Hall, was erected by her daughter, Miss Eleanor Surtees; the subject is “The Ascension,” and in the group of figures portraits of Mrs. Surtees and her son, Mr. A. Surtees, have been introduced: there are 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1822. The living is a vicarage, yearly value, £278, with residence, in the gift of and held since 1872 by the Rev. Henry Linthwaite M.A. of Jesus College, Cambridge. Here is a Wesleyan chapel. There is a colliery in this township. There are traces in this parish of a Homan station, conjectured to be that called Vindomara. Several altars with inscriptions have been found, and some of these are preserved in the cathedral of Durham. “St. Ebba, daughter of Ethelfred, king of Northumberland (593-617), and afterwards Abbess of Coldingham, built here, upon the banks of the Derwent A.D.660, a monastery, eventually destroyed by the Danes.” The Derwent adds much to the beauty of the scenery around the village. The Masters and Governors of Sherburn Hospital, 2 miles from Durham, are lords of the manor and the principal landowners and let the property on lease. The soil is clayey; the subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 1,126 acres; rateable value, £2,367; the population in 1881 was 1,402.

The children of this place attend school at Medomsley.
