Historical Description

The pleasant village of Egglescliffe contains 85 houses and 332 inhabitants. The river (which separates Yorkshire from Durham) is here crossed by an elegant iron bridge.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

EAGLESCLIFFE, or Egglescliffe, is a village, township and parish, separated from Yarm by the river Tees, 4 miles from Stockton-on-Tees, 10 from Darlington, and 23 from Durham, in the South Eastern division of the county, south-west division of Stockton ward, union and county court district, petty sessional division of Stockton, rural deanery of Stockton, archdeaconry of Auckland, and diocese of Durham. The village is situated on the steep and lofty northern bank of the Tees, and overlooks the curve in that river which nearly surrounds the peninsula upon which the town of Yarm is situated. The village is connected with Yarm by a stone bridge, erected about the year 1400 by a former Bishop of Durham: it consisted originally of five pointed arches; and there is a tradition that the north arch was cut and formed into a drawbridge during the civil wars, when Eaglescliffe with Stockton was garrisoned by the Royalists: the north arch has since that time been rebuilt in a semicircular form. The Stockton and Darlington railway intersects this township. The Leeds Northern railway, a branch of the North Eastern, enters the county of Durham at Eaglescliffe by the Yarm viaduct, a structure of forty-three arches, each of about forty feet span. There are two railway stations in this parish, viz. those of Yarm and Eaglescliffe Junction, upon the latter of which the North Eastern Railway Co. have spent £10,000 for the arrangement of their Hartlepool and Darlington and Stockton sections. The church of St. John the Baptist, is a building of stone in the Perpendicular or Third Pointed style, consisting of chancel, nave of two bays, south aisle, or Aislaby chapel, south porch, and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing 2 bells: in the chapel is the recumbent effigy of a mailed knight, and above are two chained books, one being Bishop Jewel’s “Apology for the Church of England,” in black letter; the other a life of King Charles I. supposed to have been placed here by the Rev. Isaac Basire D.D. formerly rector of Eglescliffe, who was chaplain to King Charles I. and King James II. and a distinguished missionary to the East: in the south porch called “Pembertons” lies the figure of another knight of Aislaby (Aslackby) in chain armour; and over the door is a sun-dial dated 1779 with the motto " Memento Mori:” the stained west window is a memorial to the Rev. H. J. Maltby, a former rector, d. Nov. 24, 1863, and on the south side of the chancel is another to the late Rev. John Hull M.A. and hon. canon of Manchester, rector here 1864-86: the ancient font, cylindrical in form, on a short shaft, is in good preservation: the church plate includes a completely new set of solid silver, provided in 1889 from a bequest of £100 each, by the late Robert Henry Allan esq. of Blackwell Hall, to this and nine other churches: the set comprises a flagon, two chalices, two patens, and an alms plate, all elegantly embossed and engraved with the arms and quarterings of the Allan family. The register dates from the year 1539. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £545, net yearly value £622, including 200 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Col. McKenzie, and held since 1886 by the Rev. Henry Powell, hon. canon of Manchester. There are charities of £6 annual value. Paper is manufactured here by C. T. Bainbridge and Son. The rector is lord of the manor of Eaglescliffe. The principal landowners are the rector, Mrs. Waldy, the Earl of Eldon, Mrs. Meynell and the North Eastern Railway Co. The soil is rich and loamy, and produces abundant crops of wheat, oats, beans and turnips. The area is 1,359 acres; rateable value, £10,258; the population of the township in 1881 was 655.

National School (mixed), for 135 children; average attendance, 84.
