Historical Description

EGGLESTONE is a township, village and ecclesiastical parish, formed Aug. 5, 1859, from the parish of Middleton-in-Teesdale, intersected by a small stream which rises in the neighbouring hills, 4 miles south-east from Middleton, 6 north-by-west from Barnard Castle and 2 ½ from Romaldkirk railway station (in Yorkshire) on the Tees Valley line of the North Eastern railway, in the Barnard Castle division of the county, south-west division of Darlington ward, Barnard Castle petty sessional division and county court district, Teesdale union, rural deanery of Darlington, archdeaconry of Auckland and diocese of Durham. The village has recently (1889) been lighted with oil. The church of the Holy Trinity, built in the year 1869, is a cruciform building of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts, vestry, south porch and a western tower, rising to the height of nearly sixty feet, containing one bell: in the south transept are two memorial stained windows to Miss Caroline Francis Hutchinson, d. March 27, 1870, and on the south side of the chancel is a brass to the Rev. Thomas Evan Jones, d. March 25, 1877; the east window contains elegant tracery: there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1795. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £260, in the gift of the Crown, and held since 1877 by the Rev. William Augustus Beaufort M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. The Wesleyan chapel, built in 1828, at a cost of £500, has 250 sittings; the Primitive Methodist chapel, built in 1857, at a cost of £220, will seat 100 persons; the Baptist chapel, Egglesburn, was built in 1870, at a cost of £300, and has sittings for 150 persons. The Mechanics’ Institute, established in the year 1845, has a library of about 1,000 volumes and a collection of maps and mathematical instruments, which are about to be transferred to the new library and reading-rooms, now (1889) in course of erection on land given by T. Hutchinson esq. who, with others, was a liberal subscriber to the building fund: the institution is managed by seven trustees and is maintained by members’ subscriptions, assisted by donations from the Lead Company and others. The Lead Mills or smelting works of the London Lead Company, situated about a mile to the north of the village, were first established in the reign of William and Mary, when the company, originally composed of members of the Society of Friends, received their charter as an incorporated company. During the last 50 years the mineral resources have been extensively developed and the works enlarged and remodelled at different times by the company. The condensing of noxious vapours has been effectually carried out, and more recently the Rozan process has been introduced. In close proximity to the smelting mill is a saw mill, the water supply for which is furnished by the action of a turbine and subsequently drives a water wheel in connection with smelting works here. The mine timber is prepared and furnishes back freight for those who bring ore to the mills. The royalties belong to the Duke of Cleveland and T. Hutchinson esq. Eggleston Hall occupies a picturesque situation on an eminence sloping towards the river, and is the seat of Timothy Hutchinson esq. the lord of the manor and principal landowner. The hall contains a fine collection of British birds and the gardens are arranged botanically. A little to the north of the village, above a small brook, are the remains of a Druidical circle, locally called “The Standing Stones,” great part of which has been taken away to repair the roads. At a short distance from these and close to the brook is a cross formed of a row of stones running from east to west. The soil is clayey and loam; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are pasture, and barley and oats. The area of the township is 7,919 acres; rateable value, £3,581; the population in 1881 of the township and ecclesiastical parish was 747.

National School (mixed), built in 1820, for 191. children; average attendance, 98.
