Historical Description

ESCOMB, anciently “Ediscum,” is a parish, miles West from Bishop Auckland and about 12 south from Durham, in the Bishop Auckland division of the county, northwest division of Darlington ward, Auckland union, petty sessional division and county court district of Bishop Auckland, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Auckland, and diocese of Durham. The church of St. John the Evangelist, erected in 1863, at a cost of £1,100, is a building of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a western turret containing one bell: the east window is a memorial to a member of the Stobart family: there are sittings for 230 persons.

The ancient church, formerly attached as a chapel to St. Andrew, Auckland, and still used, is a venerable structure, regarded by some archaeologists as wholly Saxon, and perhaps the only perfect example of that period in this country; it occupies a singularly isolated and remote position, and is constructed of huge blocks of stone, some of them 5 feat in length, probably obtained from the ruins of Vinovium (Binchester), many of which, by the cross-hatching upon them, a conventional form of ornament among the Romans, indicate their transference from an earlier settlement: the church consists of chancel, nave (43 ft. 6 in. by 14 ft. 4 in.), south porch, and a bell cote over the western gable of the nave containing one bell: the chancel retains a plain round-headed piscina, and two elegant Early English lights, one of which has been lowered internally to form sedilia; the chancel arch is a work of remarkable beauty and solidity, and on the western side of the wall supporting it on the north is carved a Saxon cross, some 5 inches in length, a similar cross appears on the exterior, and on the internal north wall of the chancel is a third cross, rudely carved: during the restoration, the skeleton of a very tall man, laid north and south, was found under the chancel floor: the nave has five lights, two on each side, and one at the west end, the latter and those on the south side, the heads of which consist of a single stone, closely resemble the windows in the chancel of Jarrow church: built into the south wall is a stone bearing the inscription “LEG VI.” clearly a relic from Vinovium, and proving the quartering of the 6th Legion at that station; in the same wall is fixed a rudely carved projecting sun dial: built into the northern springing of the eastern gable of the nave is a fragment of a cross, seeming earlier even than the fabric itself: the porch has seats on either side formed of massive blocks of stons, the faces of which bear the marks of Roman tooling: the doorway is square-headed, but has been widened: in the north wall is a similar doorway, now blocked, 5 feet 9 inches in height and 3 feet wide at the top, but at the bottom some inches wider; the head is formed by a single block, and each jamb by three, the middest on either side being laid horizontally; immediately over this doorway, on the inside, a very large fresco was discovered during the late restoration, but in so mutilated a condition, that, although every care has been taken to preserve it the subject depicted cannot be accurately determined: at the west end of the church a portion of the original floor, formed of small cobble stones fixed in the earth, still remains: the font has a singular octagonal oblong basin, as if intended for baptisms by immersion: there are 110 monuments except four grave covers in the floor at the east end of the nave, which at the restoration were removed here from the churchyard: attached to the west end of the church there was once a building of some kind, probably a priest’s house, the lines in the stone work of the wall, where the high pitched gable of this house abutted upon the church, are very distinct, and the foundations have been traced for some distance into the churchyards the church was restored in 1879-80, and re-opened 4th Oct. 1880, by the Bishop of Durham, and divine services are now held regularly. The register dates from the year 1545. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £300, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Durham, and held since 1867 by the Rev. Thomas Ebenezer Lord, of St. Bees. The parsonage, built in the Elizabethan style by Bishop Maltby, is situated at the south end of the village. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. Old Etherley colliery and a fire-brick manufactory are worked by Henry Stobart and Co. A cemetery of 2 acres was formed in 1862 at a cost of £700, there is 110 mortuary chapel; it is under the control of a Burial Board of 9 members. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor. The principal landowners are Thomas Jackson and John Jackson. The soil is clayey; subsoil, rock. The chief crops are wheat, oats and grass; the area is 1,063 acres; rateable value, £8,112; the population in 1881 was 3,982.

National School (mixed), built in 1840, for 379 children; average attendance, 207.
