Historical Description

ESH is a township and parish (formed in 1834 from that of Lanchester), and is a scattered village, situated on a lofty eminence, 5 ½ miles west-by-north-west from Durham, 1 ½ south-west from Witton Gilbert station, on the Consett branch of the North Eastern railway, 3 south-east from Lanchester and 8 south-by-south-west from Chester-le-Street, in the North Western division of the county, West division of Chester ward, Lanchester petty sessional division and union, Durham county court district, rural deanery, archdeaconry and diocese of Durham. The church of St. Michael, rebuilt in 1770 and again in 1859, is a small building of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south transept, south porch, north vestry and a western turret containing one bell: the stained east and west windows are memorials to several members of the Chevallier family: a small stained window in the transept, a tablet on the north wall and the south porch, were erected by parishioners and friends as memorials to the late Rev. Edmund Lee B.D., LL.D. 10 years vicar here, who died March 6th, 1884: there are 150 sittings. The register dates from the year 1567. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £330, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Manchester, and held since 1884 by the Rev. Charles Francis Dalton Hodge M.A. of Balliol College, Oxford. The Catholic church, dedicated to St. Michael at Esh Laude, is a building consisting of apsidal chancel, nave and gallery at west end, north porch and a turret containing one bell: there is a memorial tablet to the Rev. John Yates, 33 years priest here, who died in 1827, and several stained memorial windows: there are sittings for about 300 persons: attached is a residence for the priest, the Rev. Samuel Harris. The Catholic College of St Cuthbert, Ushaw, situated about one mile from the village, on a bleak eminence overlooking the ruins of Beaurepaire, or “Bearpark,” and affording an extensive view of the country round, was founded in 1804 by Dr. Gibson, the Catholic bishop of the district, for refugees, who, escaping from France at the time of the Revolution, had previously settled at Crook Hall, near Lanchester, and it is now a seminary for the education of a large number of Catholic students and boys: the buildings, completed in 1849, and extensively altered and enlarged in 1858, surround a quadrangle 230 by 180 feet, a long cloister connecting them with the junior school, and include a fine refectory 61 by 37 feet, with an oak roof, and some good portraits of distinguished ecclesiastics and others; examination hall, library with about 50,000 volumes, professors’ room, and a chapel, designed by the late A. W. Pugin, and erected 1844-8; the latter, a beautiful work in the Gothic style, 159 feet long by 35 wide, and 56 feet high, consists of an apsidal choir with eastern sanctuary, Lady chapel on the south side, and a transeptal ante-chapel at the west end, with a massive stone screen; both the sanctuary and choir have richly stained windows, and the latter is fitted with oak stalls and benches; and in the ante-chapel is a large stained window, surrounded by panels, exhibiting in groups scenes from the life of St. Cuthbert; opening out of the cloister are two small chapels, dedicated respectively to St. Carlo Borromeo and the Holy Family; in the latter are glass cases containing relics; one of the most precious of these is St. Cuthbert’s ring, found in the coffin of the saint in 1537; it was for some time in the possession of Dean Watson, and afterwards of Dr. Richard Smith, Bishop of Chalcedon in partibus infidelium, and Vicar Apostolic of the Northern district, who, on founding the convent of the English Canonesses of St. Augustine at Paris, gave the relic to that house, where it remained until transferred in 1858 to Ushaw; it is a plain ring of gold, set longways with a large oval-facetted sapphire, but whether ever actually worn by St. Cuthbert is considered open to doubt; the seminary chapel of St. Aloysius, also opening from a cloister, was erected in 1850 from designs by E. W. Pugin (the younger), and has a stained east window depicting scenes in the life of St. Aloysius, and a statue of the Virgin and Child, by Hoffman; the various rooms of the college are hung with many valuable pictures by Italian and Flemish masters, and the library, a fine apartment 122 by 30 feet, contains 45,000 volumes of books and some beautifully illuminated MSS.; the Very Rev. James Lennon D.D. president; Rev. Thomas Tatlock, vice-president. Sir Charles Frederick Smyth bart. of Elmley Lodge, Leamington, is lord of the manor and the principal landowner. The soil is various; the chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and grass; the acreage is 3,016; rateable value, £20,293; the population of the township in 1881 was 6,305.
