Historical Description
ETHERLEY is an ecclesiastical parish and scattered village, including the hamlet of Morley, and was formed in 1833 from the parishes of St. Andrew Auckland and St. Helen’s Auckland; it is situated near the river Wear, and 3 miles west of Bishop Auckland, 258 ½ miles from London and 1 ½ from Etherley station on the North Eastern railway, in the Bishop Auckland division of the county, in the northwest division of Darlington ward, Auckland union, petty sessional division and county court district of Bishop Auckland, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Auckland and diocese of Durham. The church of St. Cuthbert is a plain building of stone, erected in 1832, and restored and enlarged in 1867, at a cost of £1,020: it consists of chancel, nave, vestry, organ chamber, south porch and a western tower containing one bell: the stained east window is a memorial to John Henry Stobart, d. April 13, 1869, presented by the workmen and agents of the Etherley colliery: two other windows in the chancel are stained, and on the south side is a mural tablet of white marble and alabaster, beautifully carved, to Henry Stobart esq. d.Aug. 26, erected by the parishioners and others: on the north side of the chancel is a memorial brass, to the Rev. Wm. Benjamin Findlay M.A. former vicar, d. December 20, 1875, and to Eliza his wife, d. July 5,1879: it will seat 350 persons. The register dates from the year 1832. The living is a rectory, yearly value £400, including 70 acres of glebe land, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Manchester, and held since 1888 by the Rev. Charles Atkinson. A lecture room, built in 1864, in the Gothic style, contains a library of about 400 vols. The parish abounds with coals, freestone and other minerals. Etherley House is a beautiful residence, at present unoccupied. Here are a literary institute and reading room. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor. The principal landowners are Sir William Eden bart. D.L., J.P. of Windlestone, Messrs. Henry Stobart and Co.Mr. John Jackson, and Mr. Thomas Jackson. The soil is clay and loamy; the subsoil is rock. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley; the acreage is 5,434; the population in 1881 was 1,935.
