Historical Description

FERRY HILL is a township, village and parish, formed Oct. 10, 1843, from the parish of Merrington, with a station, 1 mile east, on the main line of the North Eastern railway, 5 ½ miles west from Sedgefield, 6 south-east from Durham, 7 east-north-east from Bishop Auckland and 254 from London, in the Mid division of the county, south-eastern division of Darlington ward, Durham petty sessional division, Sedgefield union, Bishop Auckland county court district, rural deanery of Easington and archdeaconry and diocese of Durham. The church of St. Luke, erected in 1853 and restored in 1866, at a cost of £163, is a fine edifice of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel and nave, north porch and a western turret, containing 2 bells: there are sittings for 368 persons. The register dates from the year 1843. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £237, yearly value £310, including 17 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Durham, and held since 1887 by the Rev. Arthur Julius Williams M.A. of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. The vicarage, situated south of the church, is in the Elizabethan style. A Cemetery, of 2 acres, was formed in 1887, at a cost of £1,800, for Ferry Hill and Chilton: there is one mortuary chapel: it is under the control of a Burial Board of 9 members. There are Primitive Methodist chapels here and also at Low Spennymoor. The mines and minerals mostly belong to the Earl of Eldon and Dean and Chapter of Durham, who, with Bryan John Salvin esq. of Burn Hall, Col. Charles Freville Surtees F.R.G.S., D.L., J.P. of Mainsforth and Messrs. Chapman and Morson are the principal landowners. The chief crops are grass, barley and turnips. The area of the township is 4,796 acres; rateable value, £20,765; the population of the district in 1881 was 5,200.
