Historical Description
GATESHEAD FELL, situated 2 miles south from Gateshead, is an ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1825 from the civil parish of Gateshead, and the village consists of Sheriff Hill or Gateshead High Fell, with surrounding neighbourhood, in the Chester-le-Street division of the county, Gateshead union, petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Chester and archdeaconry and diocese of Durham. Portions of the parish were assigned in 1863 and 1876 to the parishes of Eighton Banks and St. Helen, Gateshead, respectively. The church of St. John, erected in 1824-5 at a cost of £3,400, and consecrated in 1825, is a plain edifice of stone, in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel and nave, without aisles, and an embattled tower with spire, 150 feet in height, containing one bell: the church was reconstructed and thoroughly repaired in 1885 at a cost of about £2,400, and has 400 sittings. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £300, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Durham, and held since 1870 by the Rev. John Willmore Hooper Lie. Theol. of Durham University. In this parish are the celebrated grindstone quarries, which have been worked for many centuries: ancient British and Roman work-tools have been repeatedly met with in the old quarries, and millstones in different stages of preparation have also been found. Coal mines have existed in this district from a remote period. The village of Sheriff Hill or Gateshead High Fell, is situated on an eminence about 2 miles south of Gateshead, on the old road to Durham. Sheriff Hill is so called because the Sheriff, Mayor and Corporation of Newcastle were accustomed to meet the Judges of Assize at this spot, in order to conduct them to Newcastle, the old London road passing through this village. The Hospital for Infectious Diseases, erected here in 1879 by the Gateshead urban authorities, will hold 50 patients, 25 male and 25 females. Here are Methodist New Connexion and Free Methodist chapels. The population in 1881 was 2,373.
St. Helen’s Gateshead Fell is an ecclesiastical parish formed July 28, 1876, from the parishes of Sheriff Hill, St. Mary’s Gateshead, and Bensham. The church, situated in an excellent position, overlooking the Ravens worth estates and adjoining Whinney House, Gateshead, was erected in 1876 from designs by Mr. John Wardle, architect of Newcastle, at a cost of £13,000, defrayed by the late Edward Joicey esq. J.P. and is a cruciform building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of apsidal chancel, nave, transepts, organ chamber, vestry, and a tower with spire at the south-west angle: the chancel has five stained windows: the pulpit and font are handsomely carved in Durham stone, and there is a fine brass eagle lectern: the organ cost £1,000. The register dates from the year-The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £300, in the gift of Edward Joicey esq. of Blenkinsopp Hall, Haltwhistle, and held since 1876 by this Rev. William Henry Simons LL.D. of Trinity College, Dublin. This place was the scene of some fierce struggles between the Danes and Britons, one of which took place at Beaconlough, the south-east boundary of the parish. The population in 1881 was 1,993.
Whinney House, the seat of Mrs. Joicey, is a stone building in the Italian style, pleasantly situated on the slope of a hill, having delightful views of the Ravensworth woods, the river Tyne, and Northumberland hills.
