Historical Description

The village of Greatham contains 106 houses, and 446 inhabitants.

On Greatham and Seaton marshes, near the mouth of the Tees, were anciently very considerable Salt Works.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

GREATHAM is a parish, comprising the township of its Own name and Claxton, situated on the ridge of a hill, about 8 miles north-east-by-north from Stockton, 2 ½ north-west from the estuary of the Tees, with a station half a mile distant from the village, on the West Hartlepool section of the North Eastern railway; it is in the South-Eastern division of the county, north-eastern division of Stockton ward, petty sessional division and union, county court district of Hartlepool, rural deanery of Hartlepool, archdeaconry of Auckland and diocese of Durham. The church of St. John the Baptist, erected in 1270 by Robert Stichell, Bishop of Durham, was rebuilt in 1792 and enlarged in 1855, and is an ancient edifice of stone, chiefly in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of five bays, aisles, north porch, and an embattled western tower with pinnacles containing 2 bells: the chancel is maintained by the Master and Brethren of Greatham Hospital, who are the impropriators of the great tithes of the parish: the windows; of Early English date, are filled with stained glass; the lofty nave is lighted by ten round clerestory windows on either side: there are sittings for 400 persons. The parish register dates from the year 1556, and contains many interesting entries during the period of the Civil War and the Commonwealth, from 1644 to 1658. The living is a vicarage, tithe rent-charge £65, net yearly value £201, including 81 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Master of Greatham Hospital, and held since 1879 by the Rev. William Wilson Morrison M.A. of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge. Here is also a small Wesleyan chapel. The Greatham parochial institute, at present closed, formerly the Barrington boys’ schools, has a reading room, a library of 502 volumes, and bagatelle and chess rooms. Parkhurst’s Hospital was founded by Dormer Park hurst esq, in 1761, for six poor widows or unmarried women above 50 years of age, to be chosen from the township of Greatham and legally settled there; or, in default of such persons within Greatham, then from the neighbouring townships: each sister receives 16s. per month, 43. at Christmas, 2s. at Easter and 2s. at Whitsuntide, £2 yearly for coals and a gown and flannel petticoat at Christmas Matthew Carr, by will, January 28th, 1818, bequeathed £100 to the min ster and churchwardens, in trust, to be placed out on good securities, and the interest to be distributed at Christmas to poor widows resident in the parish. Rand’s Charity of £6 yearly is laid out in apprenticing poor boys, and there are a few other small charities: a feast is held here annually, on the 24th of June, the festival of St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of the church, called “Greatham Midsummer,” on which occasion rural sports are continued for two days. Greatham Hall is an ancient mansion of stone, formerly occupied by Ralph Ward-Jackson esq. to whose enterprising spirit the port and town of West Hartlepool owe their origin; it is now the residence of the Rev. Richard Waters A.K.C. Greatham Hospital, situated on the west side of the village, was founded in 1262 by Robert Stichell, Bishop of Durham, and endowed by him with the manor of Greatham, anciently in the possession of Peter de Montfort, cousin of the celebrated Simon de Montfort, Earl of Leicester, and on forfeiture by him in 1265, after the memorable battle of Evesham (August 4), it was granted by the King to Thomas de Clare, brother of Gilbert de Clare, the " Red” Earl of Hertford; but on the representation of Stichell that the manor lay within the Palatinate, he revoked the grant and allowed it to the Bishop: the hospital was rebuilt in 1803 by John William (Egerton) 7th Earl of Bridgewater, and enlarged in 1868, and is a rectangular edifice of stone, comprising a large central hall, together with rooms for the brethren and other officers: the institution, on its foundation, was dedicated to “God, the Blessed Mary, and St. Cuthbert,” and endowed with the manor of Greatham, for the reception and support of eight priests, two clerks and forty almsmen, selected from the episcopal manors of the bishopric: by the statutes of the foundation, dated January 23rd, 1272, the pensioners were all to live in one house and mess at one table, and the number was to be augmented or decreased according to the sufficiency of the income: the charter was confirmed by Edward III. and Edward IV.; and King James I. on the 20th of July, 1610, refounded the hospital, which, for the future, was to consist of a master and thirteen poor unmarried men of advanced age, and to be called “The Hospital of God in Greatham, in the county palatine of Durham :” the Bishop of Durham is now the patron and has the appointment of the master, who in turn nominates the brethren; under a scheme approved by the Court of Chancery in 1865, the hospital is to be enlarged as leases fall in, until it maintains the original number of brethren, viz.-ten decayed and aged clergymen, and forty lay brothers; and the master, in appointing lay brethren, is to give the preference to such as have seen better days and have become decayed by circumstances beyond their own control: the in-brethren receive a pension of £12 yearly, together with rooms, liberal board, attendance, clothing, gas, firing and medical attendance; and the out-brethren £26 yearly, and medical attendance; the chapel, rebuilt in 1788, possesses some very fine communion plate, presented by Sir Gilbert Gerrard, bart. of Fiskerton, Lincolnshire, master in A.D.1666. Joining the hospital are houses for the matron and porter: the control, discipline, and spiritual charge of the hospital is entrusted to the master, but the estates and expenditure of the hospital are managed by a board of 13 trustees, of whom the master, the vicar of Greatham, the rector of Sedgefield, the vicar of Stockton and the archdeacon of Auckland are ex-officio; the other trustees, exclusive of two vacancies, are the Marquess of Londonderry, Richard Ord, Thomas Appleby, John Bakewell, John Burdon and Henry Baker Tristram M.A., LL.D., F.R.S. hon canon of Durham. The mastership has been held since 1885 by the Rev.Richard Waters Theol. assoc, K.C.L. and surrogate. At the time of the Charity Commissioners’ report the revenue amounted to £1,486 5s. 3 ¾d.; and the expenditure to £601, leaving a net revenue to the master of £885 5s. 3 ¾d. subsequently reduced to £500, with residence. Among the names of former masters occur those of Bishop Sparke, suffragan of Berwick; Gabriels Clarke D.D.; Dr. Rand, Oliver Cromwell’s physician; Colonel Askew, of the Parliamentary army; John Cosin, master of Peterhouse, Cambridge, Dean of Peterborough and Bishop of Durham, 1660-72; Sir Gilbert Gerrard bart. Dr. Parkhurst, John, Earl of Bridgwater and the Hon. Augustus Barrington D.C.L. The soil is clay and gravel; subsoil, clay and loam. The principal crops are wheat, oats, potatoes and turnips. The township of Greatham comprises an area of 1,465 acres of land, 20 of water and 408 of tidal water and foreshore; rateable value, £5,910; the population in 1881 was 737.

National School (mixed), founded in 1834, & rebuilt in 1878 by subscription, for 200 children; average attendance, 90.
