Historical Description

GRINDON is a parish and township, comprising that of Thorpe-Thewles, situated on the road between Stockton-on-Tees and Durham, 4 miles from the former, in the South Eastern division of the county, north-eastern division of the ward of Stockton, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Stockton, rural deanery of Stockton, archdeaconry of Auckland and diocese of Durham. Carlton station, on the Stockton and Ferry Hill branch of the North Eastern railway, is about half a mile west from Thorpe-Thewles; and Thorpe-Thewles station, on the Stockton and Castle Eden branch of the North Eastern railway, is half a mile north-east from the village. The church of the Holy Trinity, erected in 1848 and rebuilt in 1886 from designs by Mr. R. J. Johnson, architect, of Newcastle, at a cost of £3,270, is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a western tower, with spire, containing one bell: there are 200 sittings: there is a lychgate erected as a memorial to the Rev. William Cassidi B.A. late vicar. The register dates from the year 1566. The living is a discharged vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £78, gross yearly value £350, including 80 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Marquess of Londonderry, and held since 1882 by the Rev. Herbert Anthony Vazeille Boddy M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge, chaplain to the Marquess of Londonderry K.G., P.C. There are charities of about £9 12s. 10d. annual value. Wynyard Park, the seat of the Marquess of Londonderry K.G., PC. is situated 2 miles from the vicarage at Thorpe-Thewles, and covers an area of about 2,500 acres, containing several lakes: the mansion, which stands near the margin of one of these, was originally built in 1822-41, from designs by Philip Wyatt, architect; but when nearly completed, it was totally destroyed by fire on the night of the 19th Feb. 1841, when the whole of the family portraits and pictures and many valuable and interesting objects were consumed by the flames, the loss being estimated at £150,000: the present house, the erection of which was begun immediately after this disaster, is in the Classic style, with a noble portico supported on columns of the Corinthian order, and includes on the north-west an apartment called the “Memorial room,” where are preserved, in glass cases, numerous relics of Charles William, 3rd Marquess of Londonderry K.G. the distinguished soldier and diplomatist, who died 6 March, 1854: there is also a sculpture gallery, 120 feet in length and 80 feet wide, adorned with marble columns, and a chapel with mahogany fittings and stained windows: on the highest ground in the park, and near the main avenue, stands an obelisk 120 feet in height, erected to commemorate the visit here in 1827 of the great Duke of Wellington to the 3rd Marquess, mentioned above, his companion-in-arms during the Peninsular war (1808-14). The manorial rights belong to the Marquess of Londonderry, who, with Viscount Boyne, is the principal landowner. The soil is mixed; subsoil, clay and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley, with some grazing land. The area of the parish of Grindon is 3,446 acres; rateable value, £3,445; the population in 1881 was 350.
