Historical Description

HART is an extensive agricultural parish, embracing besides the township of its own name, those of Dalton Percy, Elwick, Nesbitt, Thorp Bulmer and Throston, in the South Eastern division of the county, north-eastern division of Stockton ward, Hartlepool petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Hartlepool and archdeaconry and diocese of Durham. The village is pleasantly situated on a gentle eminence, 4 miles south-by-south-east from Castle Eden and about the same distance north-by-north-west from Hartlepool, with a station on the Sunderland and Hartlepool, and Hartlepool and Ferryhill sections of the North Eastern railway. The church of St. Mary Magdalen is an ancient edifice of limestone, consisting of chancel, Have of two bays on the north and four on the south side, aisles, south porch, and a low tower at the southwest angle, with pinnacles, and containing 3 bells: part of the tower and the chancel arch are Norman; on the external south wall of the latter is a curious bas-relief of St. George and the Dragon: in the porch and the north aisle are several grotesque heads, much mutilated: the font is octagonal in form and is ornamented by figures of saints and cherubs: in 1884 alterations of the interior of the church led to the discovery of two nearly perfect Saxon crosses as well as of the foundations of the ancient Saxon church which formerly stood here: in 1889 the church was entirely restored and re-seated at a cost of £800, when all the old wooden-framed windows were removed and the floor lowered three feet to its original level: a stained window erected in the chancel was presented by the Rev. T. Aldridge Thorne, vicar, one in the south aisle by Captain Boutflour, and another in the north aisle by Miss J. Proctor as a memorial to the Proctors of North Hart; several small windows have also been filled with stained glass: the handsome oak pulpit was the gift of Mrs. W. A. Wooler of Sadberge Hall: there are sittings for 320 persons. The register dates from the year 1557. The livingis a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £131, net yearly value £191, including 72 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1881 by the Rev. Thomas Aldridge Thorne, of St. Aidans. Adjoining the churchyard is the Manor house, and a short distance to the west are the remains of an ancient building which, from the portion of wall still standing, appears to have been monastic: the foundations extend a considerable distance to the north. Sir Frederick Acclom Milbank bart. D.L. of Thorpe Perrow, Bedale, Yorkshire, is the lord of the manor and the principal landowner. The soil is of a clayey nature; the subsoil is gravel and limestone. The chief crops are wheat, oats, beans and potatoes. The area of the township is 2,465 acres of land and 196 of foreshore; the assessed acreage is 2,457 acres; rateable value £1,915; the population in 1881 was 291.

Church School (mixed & infants), built in 1838 by the Duke of Cleveland, & enlarged by subscription in 1873, for 70 children; average attendance, 17 boys, 15 girls & 12 infants.

Thorp Bulmer is a township, 4 miles north-west from Hartlepool. The principal landowners are Colonel Scurfield and Charles Stephenson esq. The soil is loamy; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat oats, and some land in pasture. The area is 842 acres; rateable value, £1,350; the population in 1881 was 31.
