Historical Description

HUNSTANWORTH is a township, village and parish, bounded on the north by the Derwent, 13 miles from Hexham, 8 north-west from Stanhope station on the Consett and Darlington section of the North Eastern railway, about 24 south-west from Newcastle and 271 from London, in the North Western division of the county, union of Weardale and western division of the ward of Chester, county court district of Shotley Bridge, Stanhope petty sessional division, rural deanery of Stanhope, archdeaconry of Auckland and diocese of Durham, The source of the river Derwent, formed by two brooks, is on the north side of the parish. The entire village, with its church, vicarage, and separate buildings for day and Sunday schools, was rebuilt in 1863, at the expense of the then proprietor, the Rev. D. Capper, of Lyston Court, Herefordshire. The church of St. James is a building of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles, and a tower on the north-east, containing one bell: three of the windows are stained, and there are 250 sittings: in the churchyard is an extraordinary arched vault, 45 feet long by 25 feet wide, turfed over, possibly used for secreting goods and cattle during the Scottish raids. The register dates from the year 1620. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300, with residence, in the gift of E. Joicey esq. and held since 1876 by the Rev. Peter Cooke Jones M.A. of Clare College, Cambridge. In the neighbourhood of the mines there is a place of worship for the use of Wesleyans and Primitive Methodists on alternate Sundays, and there is also a building in which divine service is held during the winter months by the vicar of the parish. The Derwent lead mines in this parish have one shaft 140 fathoms and another 100 fathoms deep: there is also a water-wheel, upwards of 40 feet in diameter, with horizontal rods nearly a mile long. There are also extensive smelting mills, but at present neither the mines nor mills are worked. The principal landowners are Lord Crewe’s trustees and E. Joicey esq.; the latter, in conjunction with the trustees of the late Thomas Scottow esq. enjoy the manorial rights and privileges. The cultivated portion of the parish is chiefly pasture and meadow land. The acreage is 8,040; rateable value, £1,883; the population in 1881 was 502.

Parochial School (mixed), with master’s residence attached, for 130 children; average attendance, 54.
