Historical Description

HUNWICK with part of the township of Newton Cap forms an ecclesiastical district formed from, the parish of St. Andrew’s Auckland, August 20, 1845, and situated about 2 ¼ miles west-north-west from Bishop Auckland, with a station on the Bishop Auckland branch of the North Eastern railway, in the Bishop Auckland division of the county, northwest division of Darlington ward, Auckland union, Bishop Auckland petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Bishop Auckland and diocese of Durham. The church of St. Paul was erected in 1844, upon a site given by the late Mrs. Bell, at a cost of £700, and was enlarged in 1854, and again in 1886, at a cost of £1,500, under the direction of Mr. J. P. Pritchett, architect, of Darlington, when the nave was lengthened, a north transept, new vestries and organ chamber added and the interior fittings entirely renovated: buttresses have been built round the exterior to strengthen the walls, owing to the subsidence caused by the underground workings of the adjacent collieries: the church consists of chancel, nave, north transept, vestries and organ chamber, south porch and a western bell cote, containing one bell: the stained east window and two others were given by Mrs. Spencer, of Yarm, and another is a memorial to the three children of the Rev. J. E. Richards: there are sittings for 300 persons. The register dates from the year 1845. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £294, with residence, in the gift of the vicar of St. Andrew’s Auckland, and held by the Rev. William Frederick Cosgrove M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. There are Wesleyan, Primitive Methodist and Wesleyan New Connexion chapels here. In the neighbourhood are several collieries and brickworks, as well as a stone quarry, the property of the trustees of the late Patrick Campbell. The Rough Lea Sanitary Pipe works are also situated here. Helmington Hall, near this village, is unoccupied and in ruins. The principal landowners are Thomas Edward Yorke esq. J.P. of Bewerley Hall, Pateley Bridge, near York; Mr. Greenwell, of Red Barns, Auckland St. Andrew, the trustees of John Robson esq. and trustees of Rev. George Fielding. The soil is clayey; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat and turnips and some land in pasture. The area is 1,594 acres; rateable value, £13,047; the population of the township in 1881 was 2,086; ecclesiastical parish, 2,690.
