Historical Description

HURWORTH-ON-TEES is a considerable village, township and parish, pleasantly situated on the north bank of the river Tees, 1 mile east from Croft Bridge, 3 miles south-south-east from Darlington, 7 west from Yarm, 12 south-west from Stockton and 21 south from Durham, with a station called Croft Spa, on the main line of the North Eastern railway, in the South Eastern division of the county, southwestern division of Stockton ward, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Darlington, rural deanery of Darlington, archdeaconry of Auckland and diocese of Durham. The parish comprises the townships of Hurworth and Neasham. The sewage of this village is conveyed across the river Tees and afterwards deposited on land on the Yorkshire side of the river by means of an iron pipe 300 feet in length, supported on six light iron columns, and erected in 1877-8 at a cost of £2,000, by the late Lord Rokeby and the ratepayers of Hurworth. The river Tees here divided the two ancient kingdoms of Bernicia and Deira. The church of All Saints, situated close to the bank of the Tees, is an edifice of stone of the 15th century, consisting of chancel with aisles, nave, aisles, transepts, north and south porches, vestry and organ chamber and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing a clock and 6 bells: the tower only remains of the ancient church, the rest having been rebuilt in 1831-2 and restored (about 1870) under the direction of Mr. J. P. Pritchett, architect, of Darlington, at a cost of £4,000: the choir stalls are of oak, and the pulpit and reredos of Caen stone, with marble shafts, the panels of the latter being filled with Venetian glass mosaic: in the north porch is a monument to William Emerson, the celebrated mathematician, born here May 14th, 1701; d. 26th May, 1782, and buried in the churchyard. The church plate includes a new set of silver, provided in 1889, at a cost of £100, under the will of the late Robt. H. Allan esq. of Blackwell Hall, and consisting of a flagon, two chalices, two patens and an alms dish. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £464, yearly value £650, including 75 acres of glebe, with house, in the gift of the Rev. R. H. Williamson, of Whickham, and held since 1875 by the Rev. John Irwin M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. Here are Primitive and Wesleyan Methodist chapels and schools. The charities are of about £6 yearly value. There is a Young Men’s Club and Reading Room. The Temperance Hall is of brick, in the Gothic style, and was erected in 1864 from designs by G. G. Hoskins esq. architect. The rector of Hurworth Church row, and Richd. Heber Wightson esq. J.P. of Cusworth Park, Doncaster, Yorks, are lords of the manor; and George John Scurfield, jun. esq. E. Lloyd Pease esq. R. H. Wightson esq. Messrs. E. W. and J. H. Collier, Mrs. Alfred Backhouse, Pilmore Hall, and Jas. E. Backhouse esq. of Hurworth Grange, Thomas Loiselure Wilkinson esq. and the Rev. Robert Hopper Williamson M.A. of Whickham, Gateshead, are the principal landowners. The Hurworth Foxhounds, a subscription pack, is one of the oldest in England, W, Forbes esq. master; this village has special attractions for hunting men. The soil is of varied description, some parts of the parish being light and gravelly and the other a strong clay. The chief crops are pasturage, wheat and turnips. The area of the township is 2,355 acres; rateable value, £11,620; and the population in 1881 1,519.

National School (mixed & infants), erected in 1831 & enlarged in 1877, is a building of stone, with ornamental turrets at the north & south angles, for 220 children; average attendance, 111; & is endowed with about £28 yearly.
