Monkton History
Monkton is a township and village in the parish of Jarrow, 1 ½ miles south-west from Jarrow, 6 east from Gateshead and 7 east from Newcastle. Here is a chapel of ease to St. Paul’s, Jarrow, erected in 1881 as a memorial to the Venerable Bede: it is a building of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave and a bell gable containing one bell: the east and west windows are stained; the former is a memorial to Henry Major esq. late of Monkton, and the latter was erected by Miss Easton, formerly of Monkton, to commemorate a brother: there are sittings for 120 persons. Here is also a Free Methodist chapel, erected in 1871. The area and rateable value are returned with Jarrow; the population in 1881 was 468.
