Historical Description

KELLOE is a parish, township and village, situated 7 miles south-east from Durham and about 2 miles east from Coxhoe Bridge station on the Ferry Hill and Hartlepool branch of the North Eastern railway, in the South Eastern division of the county, Easington ward and union, Castle Eden petty sessional division, Durham county court district, rural deanery of South Easington, and archdeaconry and diocese of Durham. This place derives its name from the family of Kellaw, or Kellow, who in 1311 gave a bishop, Richard Kellow, to the see of Durham. The church of St. Helen is an ancient edifice of stone, in the Norman and Decorated styles, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a low tower containing 2 bells: on the tower is a sun-dial: the chancel was added in 1854, at a cost of £600; the east window is a memorial to Miss Wood, who died in 1856, and near which stands a very old stone cross, also two stone coffins found in the course of some excavations: the church has recently (1889) been renovated, and has 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1693. The living is a vicarage, tithe rent-charge £11, gross yearly value £1,000, including 230 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Durham, and held since 1885 by the Rev. William Richard Burnet M.A. of Durham University, hon. canon of Durham and rural dean. The Marquess of Londonderry K.G., P.C. is lord of the manor and the principal landowner. Here is an extensive colliery owned by Walter Scott esq. which gives employment to a great proportion of the inhabitants of the parish. The soil is loam; subsoil, limestone. The chief crops are wheat and some land in pasture. The township of Kelloe comprises an area of 1,592 acres; rateable value, £6,006; the population in 1881 was 937.
