The church of St. Mary is an edifice of stone in the Early English style, erected in 1856-7, at the sole expense of the Marchioness of Londonderry; it consists of a chancel, nave of three bays, south aisle, south porch and a western turret containing one bell: the stained west window was erected at the expense of the Rev. Thomas Hart Dyke, late rector, as a memorial to Bishop Van Mildert, of Durham: adjoining the chancel is a mausoleum for the Vane family, built by the late Marchioness of Londonderry, where the family monuments are now all placed, including one to Sir Henry Vane by R. Westmacott R.A.; also one of white marble (by Monti), to the third Marquess of Londonderry (Sir Charles Stewart), a distinguished soldier in the Peninsular war, and afterwards ambassador at Vienna, d. 6 March, 1854: the reredos of carved stone is a memorial to the Rev. Jonathan Wilson M.A. late rector, and was erected in 1887 from funds left by him for that purpose, and represents the Adoration of the Magi together with figures of St. John the Baptist and St. John the Divine: on the north side of the chancel is a mural tablet to the Rev.
