Historical Description

LYNESACK and SOFTLEY form a township of Hamsterley civil parish, but was formed into a parish June 21st, 1850; it is 9 miles south from Wolsingham and 7 north from Barnard Castle, and 2 west-north-west from Cockfield station on the Barnard Castle and Bishop Auckland section of the North Eastern railway, bounded on the south by the river Gaunless, and on the north by the Linburn; it is in the Bishop Auckland division of the county, north-western division of the ward of Darlington, union and county court district and petty sessional division of Auckland, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Auckland and diocese of Durham. The church of St. John, erected in 1848, is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, vestry, south porch and a western turret containing one bell: there are 244 sittings. The register dates from the year 1849. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Durham, and held since 1861 by the Rev. William Morton M.A. of Glasgow University. There is a Primitive Methodist chapel here, built in 1876; the old chapel is now used as a day school; the Wesleyan Methodist chapel was built in 1878, and there is a Free Gospel chapel. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor. The principal landowners are the Duke of Cleveland K.G. Henry Edward Surtees esq. D.L., J.P. of The Grove, Hamsterley, Frank Dixon Johnson esq. B.A., D.L., J.P. of Aykleyheads, Mr. Stevens Walker, the Butterknowle Colliery Company and the Woodland Colliery Company. The parish contains extensive collieries; owing to the development of these, the population has much increased. The area of the township is 6,357 acres; rateable value, £9,837; the population in 1881 was 2,347. The area of Lynesack parish is 4,234 acres; population, 2,415.
