Historical Description

Medomsley, a township and chapelry in the parish of Lanchester in Chester ward, 267 miles from London, and containing 80 houses, and 461 inhabitants. About two miles to the west of Medomsley, on the south side of the Derwent river, is the flourishing village of Shotley Bridge. Here is an excellent stone bridge over the Derwent, leading into Northumberland. About half a mile up the river is a very extensive paper mill for the manufactory of fine paper.

MEDOMSLEY is a parish, including the township of Medomsley and a portion of the township of Conside-cum-Knitslet; it is situated on the road from Gateshead to Stanhope, 11 ½ miles south-west-by-west from Newcastle and 2 ½ east from Ebchester station on the Consett branch of the North Eastern railway, in the North-Western division of the county, west division of Chester ward, Lanchester union, Consett petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Ryton and archdeaconry and diocese of Durham. The church of St. Mary Magdalen is an ancient building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch, and a belfry containing 2 bells: the east end of the chancel is pierced by a triplet of lancets, with plain arches on slender banded shafts with moulded and enriched caps; and on the side walls on each side, bellow the steps leading to the sacrarium, are the carved heads of a king and a bishop: there is a trefoilheaded piscina and sittings for 300 persons. The register dates from the year 1608. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £87, net yearly value £400, including 60 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Durham, and held since 1874 by the Rev. William Cockin M.A. of Wadham College, Oxford. Here are Wesleyan, Primitive and Free Methodist chapels. There are here four collieries. There is a small charity of about 10s. yearly value. Christopher Hunter M.D. the antiquary, was born at Medomsley, in 1675, d. 13th July, 1757. In 1644 the Scottish army, consisting of about 20,000 men, under the Earl of Leven, crossed the Derwent near this place on Feb. 28th, when on their march to join the Parliamentary forces in England, in accordance with the terms of the Solemn League and Covenant. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners exercise the manorial rights on Lanchester common. The principal landowners are the Hon. John G. P. Vereker, Miss Surtees, the Rev. James Allgood, Miss Allgood, James Hunter esq. Henry William Watson esq. and the Consett Iron Company. The soil is light loam; the subsoil, clay. The chief crops are potatoes, barley, oats and some land in pasture. The area of the township is 5,057 acres; rateable value, £21,799; the population in 1881 was, township, 4,133; parish, 3,742.
