Historical Description

NORTON is a parish, township and large well-built village, pleasantly situated on the road from Stockton to Sunderland, with a station at Norton Junction on the Hartlepools and Stockton and Clarence sections of the North Eastern railway, 1 ½ miles north from Stockton-on-Tees, 8 from Sedgfield, 10 from Hartlepool and 240 from London, in the South Eastern division of the county, south-west division of Stockton ward, Stockton petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Stockton, archdeaconry of Auckland and diocese of Durham: at the north end of the village is a spacious green, surrounded by houses. The church of St. Mary, formerly collegiate, belonged to a college established here in the 11th century by William de Carileph, founder of Durham cathedral, for eight prebendaries, and refounded at the beginning of the 13th century: the present edifice is a cruciform building of stone, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of three bays, transepts, aisles (all embattled), and a central embattled tower containing 3 bells; the tower and transepts are of Early Norman date, the remainder of the structure being chiefly Transitional, and the chancel arch and one at the west end Norman: the chancel retains a piscina and sedilia, and has a reredos and screen of carved oak presented by J. Lloyd Wharton esq. M.P.: the choir stalls and desks for the clergy were given by Mrs. Page and the sacrarium rails by Miss Page: the south transept, known as the “Pity porch,” was originally a chapel, dedicated to the Virgin as “Our Lady of Pity,” but has been shortened: the north transept, or “Blakiston porch,” contains several mural monuments to the Blakiston family and their successors, the Davisons: under the tower lies a fine recumbent cross-legged effigy of a knight in chain armour and surcoat, and bearing a shield with the quartered coats of Blakiston, Bowes, Conyers, Dalden and Surtees; the figure, however, is of a period anterior to the connection of the Blakistons with this place, and it is therefore surmised that it has at some time been appropriated by that family and the shield re-carved; over the head of the effigy is a richly-worked canopy, on the right side the kneeling figure of a female holding an open book, and at the feet a lion and a dog combattant: the west window is stained, and there are memorial windows to Anthony White B.A. of Norton, vice-president of the Royal College of Surgeons and senior surgeon to the Westminster hospital, d. 1849, Francis and Elizabeth Metcalfe, d, 1877, John Punshon, d. 1876, Thomas Hall Turner, d. 1877, and Isaac Hopper, d. 1873: the church was repaired and restored in 1823, and a further and complete restoration was made in 1876 at a cost of £3,577: there are 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1574. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £84, net yearly value £580, including 130 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Chester, and held since 1886 by the Rev. Mortimer Lloyd Jones Mortimer M.A. of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge. There are Congregational, Primitive Methodist and Wesleyan chapels, and a meeting house for the Society of Friends. There are charities of about £24 annual value. Norton House, a handsome mansion, is the residence of Richard C. Denton esq. J.P. The Bishop of Durham is lord of the manor, and Viscount Boyne and J. W. P. Page esq. J.P. are the principal landowners. The land is rich and fertile, and produces abundant crops of wheat, oats, barley, turnips and potatoes. The area is 4,512 acres; rateable value, £29,033; the population in 1881 was 3,195.

Schools

A School Board of 5 members was formed December 19, 1872; J. Robinson, clerk to the board; attendance officer, Matthew Close, Norton.

The Grammar School is supported by the rent of lands in this parish, held under the see of Durham; the dwelling-house, garden & school-room are freehold, & with other property producing an income of £55 yearly, are enjoyed by the master, who, in respect of them, is required to teach six boys of the parish, appointed by the vicar, without any charge; the Rev. Edward Balshaw B.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge, is the present master.

Board Schools, built in 1872, for 500 children; average attendance, 139 boys, 120 girls & 94 infants.
