Urpeth History
Urpeth is a scattered township, partly in the parish of Pelton, from which it is distant from 1 to 3 miles northwest, and 8 south from Gateshead, in Gateshead county court district. There are several extensive collieries in this township. Thomas Duncombe Eden esq. J.P. who is lord of the manor, and Calverly Bewicke esq. J.P. are the principal landowners. The area of the township is 1,725 acres; rateable value, £13,061 ;the population in 1881 was 1,693. Letters through Chester-le-Street.
