Historical Description

PENSHAW is a parish, formed out of the townships of Penshaw East and West, Herrington Waterside, South Biddick and Burnmoor, in the old parish of Houghton-le-Spring, July 27, 1838. Penshaw is situated on the side of a lofty hill near the south bank of the navigable river Wear, with a station on the Bishop Auckland and Penshaw branch of the North Eastern railway, 3 miles north-by-west from Houghton-le-Spring, 6 west from Sunderland, 9 southeast from Gateshead and 9 north-east from Durham, in the Houghton-le-Spring division of the county, north division of Easington ward, Houghton-le-Spring petty sessional division and union, Durham county court district, rural deanery of Houghton-le-Spring and archdeaconry and diocese of Durham. The church of All Saints is a plain building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave and a turret containing one bell: there are 450 sittings. The register dates from the year 1754. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £323, net yearly value £380, including 68 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Manchester, and held since 1884 by the Rev. James Moore B.A. of Magdalene College, Cambridge. There is a Wesleyan chapel in the village. In this township are several collieries, stone quarries and an iron foundry. On Penshaw Hill, about half a mile from the village, is a monument of freestone, erected by subscription, in 1844, to John, first Earl of Durham: the design is that of a Grecian temple, and from its elevated and conspicuous situation it can be seen from many parts of the country. Penshaw House, the residence of F. Stobart esq. J.P. is an excellent mansion of freestone. The Earl of Durham is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is chiefly limestone, with clay intermixed; subsoil, light. The chief crops are wheat, oats and turnips. The area of the township is 1,085 acres; rateable value, £12,073; the population in 1881 was 2,605; the area of the ecclesiastical parish is 1,838 acres; the population in 1881 was 3,892.
