Historical Description

The village of East Rainton, containins 112 houses, and 671 inhabitants; and about one mile from the foregoing place, we pass through the township of West Rainton, situated 266 miles from London, and containing 230 houses, and 1160 inhabitants.

WEST RAINTON is a parish comprising the townships of Cocken, Moorhouse, and West Rainton, and a portion of East Rainton, and was formed July 27, 1838, from the parishes of Houghton-le-Spring and Pittington; in the Houghton-le-Spring division of the county, north division of Easington ward, Houghton-le-Spring petty sessional division and union, county court district of Durham, rural deanery of Houghton-le-Spring and archdeaconry and diocese of Durham. West Rainton is a township, situated on the road from Durham to Sunderland, 4 miles north-east from Durham, and 260 from London. The church of St. Mary the Virgin, rebuilt in 1864, at a cost of £6,000, by Sir George Elliot bart. M.P. is an edifice of stone in the earliest Middle Pointed style, and the design is characterized by exceeding loftiness: it consists of chancel, nave, aisles, north and south porches, and a tower at the north-west angle with spire rising to an altitude of 130 feet, and containing one bell: there are 500 sittings. The register dates from the year 1825. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £307, gross yearly value £400, including glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Durham, and held since 1885 by the Rev. George Dale Copeland B.D. Cantuar and surrogate. There is a library, news, and reading room here. The Nos. 9 and 10 batteries of the 2nd (Seaham) Durham Artillery Volunteers have a drill hall here, built by the fifth Marquess of Londonderry K.P.; the head quarters are at Seaham Harbour. The Dean and Chapter of Durham are lords of the manor, and with the Ecclesiastical Commissioners chief landowners. The soil and subsoil are clayey. The chief crops are wheat, oats and turnips. The area of the township is 1,776 acres; rateable value, £14,360; the population in 1881: was, township, 2,888; ecclesiastical parish, 3,778.
