John Abbs esq. and Miss Mallam; one at the west end to W. N. Taylor esq. and another at the east end to Captain and Mrs. Hill: there are sittings for 400 persons. The register dates from the year 1827. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £300, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Durham, and held since 1880 by the Rev. Henry William Barber M.A. of Queen’s College, Oxford. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels, and the Christian Lay Brethren have a place of worship here. Here are the extensive colliery works of the Ryhope Coal Company Limited, established in 1858, and employing a great number of men. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners, who are lords of the manor, and the Rev. John William Smith M.A. rector of Dinsdale, are the principal landowners. The soil is a light loam, suitable for green crops and also barley, wheat and oats; subsoil, gravel and clay.
