Historical Description

The flourishing village of Ryton contains many handsome buildings, and a spacious church, with a square tower, which is terminated by a lofty spire of an octangular shape, rising to the height of 108 feet.—Near the wall of the church-yard is a large barrow, planted with trees, but which does not appear to have been opened; a similar one however at Bradley Hall, situated in this parish, was opened a few years since, and was found to contain the remains of a human body, lying in a square cavity, formed by stones placed edge ways. This village was burnt by the Scots in the year 1297.—The parish of Ryton, which includes in it the townships of Chopwell, Crawnok Ryton, Ryton Woodside, Stella, and Winlaton, contains 5,763 inhabitants and 1,202 houses. It is a rectory in the patronage of the Bishop of Durham, and situated 283 miles from London.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

RYTON is a parish and pretty village, situated on an eminence on the south bank of the river Tyne and near the road from Newcastle to Hexham, 281 miles north from London, 7 west from Newcastle and 8 west from Gateshead, with a station on the Newcastle and Carlisle section of the North Eastern railway, in the Chester-le-Street division of the county, west division of Chester ward, Gateshead union, petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Ryton, Durham archdeaconry and diocese. The parish as originally constituted out of Ryton old parish (Oct. 7, 1834) comprised the townships of Ryton, Crawcrook and Ryton Woodside. The Local Government Act, 1858 (21 and 22 Viet. c. 98), was adopted here April 24, 1863: The district is controlled by a Local Board of 9 members. The church of the Holy Cross, situated on a woody height on the south bank of the Tyne, is an ancient building of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles, south porch, and a western embattled tower with octagonal broach spire 108 feet high, covered with lead, and containing a clock and 4 bells: several of the windows are stained, including a memorial window to the late Ven. Archdeacon Thorp D.D. who was rector of this parish for upwards of fifty years: in the chancel is the marble effigy of an unknown ecclesiastic with a book in his hand and his feet resting upon a lion, and there are mural brasses with illuminated shields of arms to the Binney family, of whom was Francis Binney, rector of Ryton, ob. 1617: on the south wall is a slab curiously carved to Bernard Gilpin, “the reformer of the north” and rector of Houghton-le-Spring, 1556-83: there are also memorials to the Anderson, Simpson and Thorp families: the church was in 1886 well restored at a cost of upwards of £3,000, contributed by Miss Easton, of Nest House, Gateshead, and of Layton Manor, Yorkshire, and by Thomas Spencer esq. of The Grove, Ryton: elaborately carved oak benches have been placed in the nave and aisles, a new organ chamber and two vestries erected, an oak roof placed over the chancel and the east window filled with stained glass in memory of Emma Easton: the reredos and pulpit of oak and boxwood are also recent additions: there are 400 sittings: in the churchyard are some open altar tombs with baluster supports at the angles. The register dates from the year 1581. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £590, net yearly value £482, including 103 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Durham, and held since 1882 by the Rev. Thomas Henry Chester M.A. of Durham University, hon canon of Durham, rural dean of Ryton: of the total tithe rent-charge a sum of £78 17s. 6d. has been given to the endowment of Greenside, together with 60 acres of glebe: Thomas Seeker, Bishop of Bristol 1735-7, was rector of Ryton previous to his appointment to that see. There are Congregational and Wesleyan chapels here, and in the centre of the village stands a stone cross, erected in 1795. The Cemetery consists of 5 acres with one mortuary chapel, and is now under the control of the Local Board, acting as Burial Board. The charities amount to about £20 yearly. There are several collieries in this parish, worked by the Stella Coal Co. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor. The Misses Towneley, William Rutherford Lamb esq. Archibald Dunn esq. and Lady Thomas Hay are the chief landowners. The soil is gravel and sandy; subsoil, various. Chief crops, wheat, barley and green crops generally. The acreage is 1,201; gross rateable value, £15,652; rateable value, £15,893; the population in 1871 was 1,939; and in 1881, 4,561.
