Historical Description

Seaton Carew, pleasantly situated, on the borders of the sea, near the reflux of the Tees and the German Ocean. This place, which chiefly consists of neat cottages, forming three sides of a quadrangle, is very much frequented for sea bathing ; and a respectable inn, with a row of lodging-houses, communicating with it, both on the ground and second floors, has lately been built for the reception of company. This village contains 71 houses, and 312 inhabitants.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

SEATON CAREW is a township within the borough of West Hartlepool, and is an ecclesiastical parish, formed January 4, 1842, out of the parish of Stranton, with a station on the West Hartlepool section of the North Eastern railway; it is situated on the sea shore, 248 miles from London, 10 north-east of Stockton and 1 ½ south from West Hartlepool, and is held in high estimation as a healthy bathing place; at is in the South Eastern division of the county, southeastern division of Stockton ward, West Hartlepool petty sessional division, union and county court district, and rural deanery of Hartlepool, archdeaconry of Auckland and diocese of Durham. Salmon fishery is carried on here to a great extent. The village is well lighted with gas, and supplied with water from the Hartlepool Gas. and Water Company’s works. The Local Government Act of 1858 was adopted here, November 2, 1866, and the district merged in that of West Hartlepool in 1883, under the Act 46 & 47 Viet. c. 138. The church of the Holy Trinity, erected in 1831, at a cost of about £1,700, is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a square embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing a clock: there are several stained windows, one of which is a memorial to Mrs. Fawcus, of Over Dinsdale Hall; also one to Ralph Thompson Walker, who died 1876: the interior was rearranged and re-seated with open benches in 1864, at a cost of £245, and there are sittings for about 500 persons, one half of which are free. The register dates from the year 1831. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £158, with 16 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Mrs. Lawson, and held since 1835 by the Rev. John Lawson M.A. of St. Alban Hall, Oxford. Here is a Wesleyan Methodist chapel, erected in 1830, and enlarged in 1878; there is also a meeting house for the Society of Friends, used in the summer months only. The Temperance Hall, built by the late Edward Backhouse esq. at a cost of £800, will hold 400 persons, and is used for entertainments. Seaton Carew is a lifeboat station, and was first established as such about 1823: it is calculated that during the period which has elapsed since that date the lifeboat here has been the means of saving 260 lives: the present splendid boat is called by the name of its donor, “John Lawson:” the boat house is a brick building situated at the south end of the town. There is an extensive brewery here.

The township of Seaton Carew comprises an area of 2,665 acres; rateable value, £12.552 15s.; the population in 1881 was 1,734.
