Historical Description

Sedgefield, an ancient town, formerly invested with the privilege of a market, but which has been long since neglected. This town is situated on one of the most pleasant and healthful spots in the county, and from the salubrity of the air, and the longevity of its inhabitants, it has been: denominated the Montpelier of the North. From its elevated situation, and being open to every aspect, the prospects are grand and extensive.

In the centre of the town is a large square, in which is a market cross, and on the east side is the Church, which is described by Mr. Hutchinson as being about 72 feet in length, from the tower to the chancel. The aisles are formed by rows of three pillars, light, and elegantly shaped; each pillar being composed of four perfect cylinders, not placed in a square, but in a lozenge east and west, so as to present a broad front towards the centre of the nave; the columns are belted in the middle; the bases have few members, and those of the Saxon order; but the capitals are variously ornamented, with fillets of palm branches, vine leaves, wreaths of flowers, mingled with birds and other figures ; in many parts delicately pierced. The arches are pointed and ornamented with mouldings; the outward one zig-zag; they spring from pilasters on the side walls, and rise from grotesque heads, on the capitals of the pillars. The chancel is enclosed from the nave, by a rich skreen of tabernacle work in oak, with three stalls on each side, divided by beautiful light columns, and canopied. The chancel is nearly 36 feet in length, and neatly wainscoted with oak.— The transepts appear to have been added to the original building at different times. On an inlaid slab, in the north aisle, is a curious monument, representing two skeletons in shrouds, apparently male and female; the latter having a winding sheet folded over the middle; above these figures is a place for a label, which has long been removed, and the inscription is unknown. Near the church is an Hospital or Alms-house for ten poor men and women, adjoining which is a Free Grammar-school, for the education of six poor children. There are also two public academies for boys, taught by eminent clergymen of the Established Church, and a seminary for young ladies. The inns are respectable, and since the establishment of two coaches which pass between Durham and Stockton, the town has regained a part of its ancient importance. The gentlemen of the Lambton and Sedgefield Hunt, have for the last five years hunted from this place for upwards of six weeks each season.

Sedgefield is situated 256 miles from London, and contains, according to the returns of the late act, 1268 inhabitants, and 298 houses.

About half a mile to the west of Sedgefield, is Hardwicke Hall, the seal of Wm. Russell, Esq.— This place is much celebrated for the elegance of its ornamental buildings, and for the beauty of its pleasure grounds. The mansion is an irregular structure, erected by Mr. Russell, in which convenience has been more studied than elegance. The grand terrace is a fine gravel walk, about 560 paces in length, with a descent to a circular bason of water; on the banks of which is the Bathing-house, with an open portico, of the Doric order, in front, leading to the Bath, on the sides of which are apartments to breakfast and repose in ; from this place a winding path leads to the Lake, a sheet of water covering nearly 44 acres, and united with a serpentine river or canal, which winds through the grounds. On the side of the canal is a building called the Library, the windows of which are of painted glass. In front of this edifice is an artificial Cascade; but the dashing of the water can scarcely be heard, though close by the feet. On a circular eminence, in a pleasant meadow, is a quadrangular building, with an open colonnade, called the Temple ; ornamented with eight busts of the most superior poets, placed in niches, on the outside: the interior has an octagonal dome, decorated with paintings by the Bornese, father and son ; between the windows, in recesses, are medallions of the four Seasons, in stucco, by Cartisi; and the floor is inlaid with different coloured marbles in Mosaic work. The Banqueting House is a superb building, of the Corinthian order, containing one principal apartment, the ceiling and sides of which are decorated with paintings, by Hayman, with some elegant stucco-work and rich gilding; together with busts of Palladio, Vitruvius, Inigo Jones, &c. The building called the Ruin, is an artificial semblage of a demolished castle, with a round tower entire, from the summit of which, as well as from different points in the grounds, are many fine and extensive prospects.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

SEDGEFIELD is a small town, parish and township, and head of a union, situated on the road between Durham and Stockton, 10 miles from the former and 9 from the latter place, 13 by road from Hartlepool, 24 from Sunderland, 25 from Gateshead, 12 from Darlington and 248 from London, with a station situated in the township of Bradbury, 1 ½ miles from the village, on a branch of the Ferry Hill and West Hartlepool line of railway: it is in the South Eastern division of the county, south-eastern division of the ward of Stockton, petty sessional division and county court district of Stockton-on-Tees, rural deanery of Stockton, archdeaconry of Auckland and diocese of Durham. The parish comprises the townships of Bradbury, Butterwick, Embleton, Fishburn, Foxton and Shotton, Mordon, and Sedgefield. Foxton and Shotton were ecclesiastically included in the parish of Stillington by Order in Council, July 15, 1886. The town is supplied with excellent water.

The church of St. Edmund the Bishop is a cruciform building of stone in the Early English and Decorated styles, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of four bays, aisles, transepts, with porch in the south transept, and an embattled western tower 90 feet in height, with octagonal battlemented turrets at the angles, rising from the set-off of the buttresses, and finished as pinnacles; the tower contains a clock and 5 bells: the chancel, erected about 1379, is lighted at the east end by a large window of five lights, with good flowing tracery: the side walls are panelled with oak and have canopied stalls, divided by slender shafts: a very fine screen of tabernacle work of late Perpendicular character, and similar to, but larger than that at Brancepeth, divides the chancel and nave, and consists of a central round-headed doorway, surmounted by an elaborate canopy of two tiers, with three other canopies, over as many stalls on either side, the crocketed pinnacles rising to the chancel arch: the transepts were chantry chapels, and in the south transept is a memorial window to Mr. John Parrington, erected in 1877: here also are two recumbent effigies, discovered during the restoration: the nave, dating from the latter part of the 12th century, has very fine and elegant Early English arcades, the piers of which each consist of four clustered and banded shafts on square bases with exquisitely foliated caps, and support wide moulded arches, with an outer enrichment of dog-tooth moulding springing from corbel heads: in the north aisle is a memorial window to the Rev. T. L. Strong B.D. erected in 1863 by the bishop and 47 clergy of the diocese, and a brass with effigies of a man and his wife as skeletons in shrouds: in the south aisle is a memorial window to Mark and Ralph Arthur Ord esq. and there is another at the west end to four clergy of this parish, erected by the parishioners in 1864: the organ was given by Dr. Pickering in 1708: the church was partially restored and repaired in 1850, and again in 1871: the chancel was restored in 1830 by public subscription and the south transept in 1876-7; the chancel was repaved at the expense of the late rector: there are 600 sittings. The register dates from the year 1580. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £1,158, net yearly value £1,500, including 500 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Durham, and held since 1885 by the Rev. David Richard Falconer M.A. of Durham University, hon. canon of Durham, rural dean and surrogate. Here is a Wesleyan Methodist chapel. The Cemetery, situated on the Stockton road, was formed in November, 1861, and consists of 2 acres given by a former rector for that purpose: it has a mortuary chapel and is under the control of a Burial Board. Here are almshouses for five men and five women, founded in 1703 and restored in 1868, in the gift of the rector and a select vestry of 24 members; several other charities are distributed according to the direction of the donors. This was formerly a market town, but the markets are obsolete.

A fair for the sale of swine is held on the first Friday of every month. The Mechanics’ Institute, established in 1850 and rebuilt in 1859, contains a library of 1,000 volumes and reading rooms. About 1 ½ miles north is the County Lunatic Asylum, erected in 1858 of red brick, with white brick dressings, in the Domestic Gothic style, from designs by Mr. John Howison, architect, of Durham, and Dr. Smith: it is available for 1,200 inmates: there are about 350 acres of land attached, on which the patients are employed: a new ward is now (1889) in course of construction, from designs by Mr. William Crozier: the chapel attached is a building of brick, seating 700 persons.

Hardwick Hall, a spacious structure, situated in the midst of a beautiful and well-wooded park of near 200 acres, is the property of Viscount Boyne, and (1889) at present unoccupied. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners, in succession to the Bishops of Durham, are now lords of the manor, and Viscount Boyne is chief landowner.
