Historical Description

SHADFORTH is a township and parish, formed from Pittington parish July 9, 1841, and comprises the colliery village of Ludworth and part of Sherburn Hill, situated in a valley, through which runs a small rippling brook called the Shadforth Beck, which flows westward to the river Wear, 5 miles Cast from Durham, and 2 south-east from Sherburn station on the main line of the North Eastern railway, in the Mid division of the county, south division of Easington ward, Durham petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Easington and archdeaconry and diocese of Durham. The church of St. Cuthbert, erected in 1839, on a declivity on the north side of Shadforth Beck, is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a western turret containing one bell: the east window is stained: it is proposed (1889) as soon as sufficient funds are available, to restore or rebuild the church, for which purpose a sum of £1,500 is in hand: there are 500 sittings. The register dates from the year 1839. The living is a rectory, yearly value £450, including 233 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Durham, and held since 1886 by the Rev. Willmore Hooper, M.A. of Hatfield Hall, Durham. The Primitive Methodists have a small chapel here; and there is a subscription reading-room, well supplied with local newspapers, magazines &c. The Misses Carr-Standish, of Duxbury Park, Lancashire, are ladies of the manor, and the Rev. W. Hooper M.A. the trustees of Mr. T. Crawford, Mr. John Clark, of Horsley hill, South Shields, the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, and Messrs. Botterill and Loach, of Sunderland, are the principal landowners. The soil is light, sandy and loamy; the subsoil is limestone. The chief crops are wheat, oats, potatoes and turnips. The area of the township is 2,906 acres, and of the parish 3,925; rateable value, £5,701; and the population of the ecclesiastical parish in 1871 was 2,228, and of the township 1,064, and in 1881,1,677.
