Historical Description

SHILDON is a market town, township and district parish, formed in 1837, and including the townships of Middridge and Middridge Grange, 250 miles from London, 9 west from Darlington and 3 south-east of Bishop Auckland, with a station at New Shildon on the Stockton and Darlington branch of the North Eastern railway, in the Bishop Auckland division of the county, north-west division of Darlington ward, Auckland union, petty sessional division and county court district, and in the rural deanery and archdeaconry of Auckland, and diocese of Durham. The North Eastern Railway Company supplies the town with gas. The townships of Shildon and East Thickley are governed by a Local Board, formed in 1877, and consisting of 12 members. The church of St. John, erected in 1834, is an edifice of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, north and south porches and a western tower containing 2 bells: there are sittings for 756 persons. The register dates from the year 1834. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300, with residence and about 1 ¼ acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Durham, and held since 1866 by the Rev. Horatio Spurrier M.A. of Oriel College, Oxford. There are Wesleyan, Primitive Methodist, Congregational and Free Methodist chapels. Here are Conservative and Liberal clubs. The market day is Friday. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor. The Earl of Eldon, Harry Sheldon Cradock Smithson esq. J.P. of Morris Grange, Richmond, Yorks and Henry Edward Surtees esq. D.L., J.P. of the Grove, Hamsterley, are the chief landowners. The area of the township of Shildon is 598 acres; rateable value, £17,507. The population of the township in 1881 was 6,946 and of the Local Board district, 8,704.
