Historical Description

SOUTHWICK is an ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1847 from the civil parish of Monkwearmouth; and is 1 mile north-west from Sunderland, on the north bank of the river Wear, in the Houghton-le-Spring division of the county of Durham, eastern division of Chester ward, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Sunderland, rural deanery of Wearmouth, officially of the Dean and Chapter of Durham and archdeaconry and diocese of Durham; it is within the parliamentary borough of Sunderland, but not within the municipal borough, having its own Local Board, formed in 1863, and consisting of 9 members: Low Southwick has ship-building yards, glass works (bottle and sheet), lime works, earthenware, brick and tile manufactories and an engine factory: iron ship-building is carried on extensively, but the building of wooden vessels has ceased. Holy Trinity Church, erected in 1842, is an edifice of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, and a western tower 60 feet in height, with 4 pinnacles and containing 1 bell there are 650 sittings. The register dates from the year 1844. The living was declared a rectory, June 26, 1866; tithe rent-charge £116, net yearly value £680, including glebe (£350), with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Durham, and held since 1863 by the Rev. Charles Edward Stuart Collingwood M.A. late fellow of University College, Durham. The church of St. Columba, on Cornhill, built in 1889, is a plain building of red brick with stone dressings, consisting of apsidal nave and aisles: there are 800 sittings. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £200, in the gift of the Crown and the Bishop of Durham alternately, and held since 1885 by the Rev. Wilfrid Bird Hornby M.A. of Brasenose College, Oxford. There are Congregational, Primitive Methodist, United Methodist and Wesleyan chapels. A Cemetery of 9 acres was formed in 1882, at a cost of is said to have slain a great “worm” or serpent which infested these parts, and to have received this estate as a reward on the tenure of rendering up his victorious sword to every new bishop of Durham entering the diocese at this point. Sockburn Hall, the residence of Francis Arthur Edward Samuelson esq. is a modern edifice in the Domestic Gothic style; in the hall is preserved a cross-legged effigy in chain armour, said to represent the worm-slayer, and the traditional sword is also kept here; near the hall are the ruins of an old church, partially demolished in the year 1838, dating from the 12th or 13th centuries, with some remains of a still earlier building. The area is 653 acres; rateable value, £805; the population in 1881 was 44.

The landowners are Colonel Stafford, William Dodd Pratt esq. of South Hylton; James Herring esq. Anthony Scott esq. Robert Thompson esq. and the rector of Southwick. The area of the township is 1,012 acres; rateable value, £25,350; the population in 1871 was 6,566, and in 1881, 8,178.
