Historical Description

The ancient town of Staindrop, seated in a beautiful vale, and formerly a royal villa, as appears from Canute granting his mansion-house here to the monastery of Durham, as an offering at the holy shrine of St. Cuthbert.

The town has a weekly market on Saturday; and contains, according to the late returns, 247 houses, many of which are well-built, and 1273 inhabitants.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

STAINDROP is a township, parish and small town, situated on the road from the city of Durham to Barnard Castle, 19 miles south-west from the former place, 6 northeast from the latter and 2 north from Winston station on the Darlington and Barnard Castle section of the North Eastern railway, in the Barnard Castle division of the county, south-west division of Darlington ward, Barnard Castle petty sessional division and county court district, Teesdale union, rural deanery of Darlington, archdeaconry of Auckland and diocese of Durham. The parish comprises the townships of Staindrop, Raby and Keverstone, Shotton and Langley Dale. The town consists principally of one wide street, about half a mile in length, and contains several good houses and is lighted with gas. The Langley Beck, which is crossed by a bridge north-east of the church, passes it on the north and separates it from Raby. The church of St. Mary, situated at the east end of the town, is an ancient edifice of stone, in the Transition-Norman, Early English and later styles, consisting of chancel of three bays, clerestoried nave of four bays, aisles, south porch and a lofty embattled western tower containing a clock and 6 bells: the chancel, dating from 1343 to 1378, and its eastern wall from 1460, is lighted by large Perpendicular windows, with good tracery, and retains its piscina and three graduated sedilia of Early English date, with trefoiled canopies, boldly moulded and supported at either end by slender shafts and in the centre by two foliaged corbels, one of which springs from a head: over the chancel arch is a Saxon dial, and there are two windows of the same period; the richly-carved stalls and desks, twenty-three in number, belonged to the hospital founded here in the reign of Hen. IV. (1399-1413), by Ralph de Nevill K.G. 4th baron Nevill and 1st Earl of Westmoreland, the buildings of which, now long destroyed, abutted on the north wall of the nave; this lord also founded three chantries in the church, one of which was in the south aisle, where the sedilia remain, and at the south-east angle is a projecting structure of three sides with a sloping groined roof, formerly serving as a porch for the chantry priest; the windows in this aisle have segmental-headed windows with reticulated tracery: the nave is Transition-Norman, dating from about 1200, and the arcades have circular columns, some of the caps being foliaged: the belfry stage of the tower, dating from about 1360, overhangs the lower portion and is carried on corbels: this church is the burial place of the Nevills of Raby, and their tombs here are among the finest examples of the kind in the county; these include, in the south aisle, a magnificent altar-tomb of alabaster, with effigies, to Ralph de Nevill K.G. ob. 1425, and his two wives, Lady Margaret (Stafford), who is also here buried, and Joan (de Beaufort), who was interred in Lincoln Cathedral; the figure of the earl is in plate armour, with wreathed bascinet and camail, and over all a tunic with the Nevill saltire, and a collar of SS. and his sword is attached by a richly embossed belt; the female effigies have coronets and close-fitting dresses with flowing skirts; at the foot of each effigy are the mutilated figures of two angels, kneeling at desks, on which are open books; the sides of this fine tomb are surrounded with traceried panels alternating with canopies surmounted by small turrets and inclosing pedestals for statues: two recessed arches in the wall of this aisle, one of which has a triangular crocketed canopy, contain female effigies in long robes and wearing wimples, and supposed to represent Euphemia (Clavering) and Margery (de Thweng), the wives of Ralph, 1st baron Nevill, ob. 1331; here also is a small male effigy, attired in a loose-sleeved garment, and the head on a pillow, on each side of which are shields of the Nevill arms; near the tomb of the earl is a third female effigy: in the north aisle is a wooden tomb to Henry, 5th Earl of Westmoreland K.G. ob. 1564, and his wives, Lady Anne (Manners) and Jane (Cholmondeley); the sides of the tomb contain, in niches, the figures of eight children, and at the ends are finely carved shields with numerous quarterings: in the chancel is a monumental sarcophagus with recumbent effigy to Henry (Vane), 2nd Earl of Darlington, d. 10th September, 1792, and Margaret (Lowther), his wife, d. loth Sept. 1800; another monument to Lady Katherine Margaret (Powlett), ob. 16th June, 1807, wife of William Henry, 3rd Earl and 1st Duke of Cleveland K.G.; one with recumbent effigy to Lady Sophia (Poulett), ob. 9th January, 1859, wife of Henry, 2nd Duke of Cleveland K.G.; and a splendid altar-tomb of white marble, with recumbent effigy, to the 1st duke, mentioned above, d. 29th January, 1842; near the west end on the south side is a mural monument, with bust by Nollekens, surrounded by carved books and MSS. to John Lee esq. Attorney-General for the County and M.P. for Higham Ferrars, d. 5th August, 1793; below the inscription is a shield of arms: the font, of Teesdale marble, is octagonal, and one of the panelled sides contains a brass with the arms of Nevill: there are eight stained windows, including two memorials to Henry, 2nd duke of Cleveland K.G. d. 18th January, 1864, erected by his friends and tenants and his sister-in-law, Lady Augusta Powlett; and on the north side of the church is a brass to William, 3rd duke, d. 6th September, 1864: the church was restored in 1849 and has sittings for 640 persons: adjoining the churchyard on the north is a mausoleum, erected by the 2nd duke, in which his remains and those of other members of the family now rest. The register dates from the year 1635. The living is a vicarage, annexed to the rectory of Cockfield, average tithe rent-charge £180, joint gross yearly value £560, in the gift of the Duke of Cleveland K.G. (in whom the great tithes of the parish are vested), and held since 1846 by the Rev. Harry Curteis Lipscomb M.A. of University College, Durham, and surrogate. A complete list of the rectors and vicars is preserved here, from Aldwin, Presbyter de Staindrop, presented in 1131, up to the present date. Here are Congregational, Primitive Methodist and Wesleyan chapels, and the Society of Friends have a meeting-house. The Scarth Memorial Hall is a reading and club room with large room, which will contain 400 people, and is used for various purposes, erected by subscription as a testimony of esteem for the late T. F. Scarth, who had been for many years estate agent for the Duke of Cleveland: the first stone was laid on the 19th of November, 1874, by Sir J. W. Pease bart. M.P. In 1862 almshouses were erected by Henry, Duke of Cleveland, for twelve inmates, each with cottage and garden, with an income from an estate at Stapleton, in Yorkshire. Staindrop House is the residence of William Thomas Scarth esq. J.P. Streatlam Castle, 2 ½ miles south-west, is described under Barnard Castle. The Duke of Cleveland K.G. is lord of the manor and the principal landowner. The soil immediately around Staindrop is alluvial deposit resting upon millstone grit; north-east are the coal measures, and west the sandstone and shale of the land measures. The chief crops are barley, oats and roots, and the grass land is highly productive, the farms being let in parcels of from 50 to 500 acres, and there are allotments of 1/8th of an acre, and grass land divided into small in-closures of from two to three acres, for the working classes.
