Historical Description

STELLA is an ecclesiastical parish, formed Aug. 8, 1845, from the parishes of Ryton and Winlaton, situated on the south bank of the river Tyne, and the road from Newcastle to Hexham, and includes Blaydon and Derwenthaugh, and is 1 mile west from Blaydon station on the Newcastle and Carlisle section of the North Eastern railway, and 5 west from Newcastle, in the Chester-le-Street division of the county, east division of Chester ward, Gateshead union and petty sessional division, Newcastle county court district, rural deanery of Ryton and archdeaconry and diocese of Durham. The church of St. Cuthbert is at Blaydon. The living was constituted a rectory June 5, 1866. The Catholic church, dedicated to St. Mary and St. Thomas Aquinas, is a building of stone in the Gothic style, erected in 1831; the altar is richly ornamented, and the windows are stained: the presbytery attached is in the same style of architecture: there is a cemetery adjoining. Stella Hall, the seat of Joseph Cowen esq. is a fine old gabled building of stone pleasantly situated, the north front overlooking the Tyne, and commanding extensive views of the surrounding country: it formerly belonged to the Benedictine nuns of Newcastle, and was subsequently the seat of the Tempests. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor. The Misses Towneley are the chief landowners. The soil is clay and loam; subsoil, various. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and potatoes; the area is 285 acres; rateable value, £2,618; the population in 1881 was 743.
