Historical Description

The hamlet of Tanfield, situated seven miles from Gateshead, and 269 from London. In the neighbourhood of this hamlet is a remarkable arch, over a deep dell, called Causey Burn ; the span of the arch is 103 feet, and its entire elevation about 60 feet; it was erected in the year 1729, to obtain a level for the passage of coal waggons, and the expence of constructing it is said to have amounted to 12,0001. The architect is reported to have built a former arch, which fell from want of weight, and that the apprehension of the second experiencing the same fate induced him to commit suicide.

TANFIELD is a township and parochial chapelry, and consists of the hamlets of Whit-le-Head, Beamish, Tantobie, Stanley and Shield Row. The village is situated 8 miles south-west from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 7 north-west from Chester-le-Street, 12 north-west from Durham and 2 ½ east from Rowlands Gill station on the Consett branch of the North Eastern railway, in the North Western division of the county, in Chester-le-Street and Lancaster civil parishes, middle division of Chester ward, Lanchester petty sessional division and union, Consett county court district, rural deanery of Ryton and archdeaconry and diocese of Durham. Burnopfield and Lintz Green, formerly parts of this parish, were united with other townships into a separate ecclesiastical district in 1871. The river Team runs through the chapelry, and the North Eastern Railway Company conveys coals from several pits to the river Tyne and Jarrow docks for exportation. The church of St. Margaret, rebuilt and enlarged, excepting the chancel, in 1749, is a building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 2 bells; the tower, on which is a sun-dial, was rebuilt in 1853 at the expense of John Eden esq. of Beamish Hall; there are memorial tablets to the Davison, Eden and Ripon families, also two stained memorial windows, erected by public subscription, one to the late John Eden esq. at a cost of £110, in 1885, and the other to Edward and John Joicey esqrs. at a cost of £100, in 1882: there are seats for 700 persons. The register dates from the year 1719. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £61, yearly value £300, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Durham, and held since 1877 by the Rev. Thomas Hewan Archdall M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin, and surrogate. There are Primitive Methodist chapels at Tanfield and Tanfield Lea, the latter built in 1876, and a Wesleyan chapel at Tanfield Lea, erected in 1873. Small charities, amounting to about £15, are distributed by the vicar and churchwardens to the poor of the parish. There are eleven collieries within this parish; also coke ovens, stone quarries and brick and tile works. The Tanfield coals have a high reputation, Thomas Duncombe Eden esq. of Beamish Hall, is lord of the manor. The Marquess of Bute K.T. the Earl of Strathmore, the Townley trustees and Messrs. James Joicey and Co. are the chief landowners; there are several smaller proprietors. The soil is clayey; subsoil, gravel and stone. The crops are of the usual kind. The area of the township is 5,820 acres; rateable value, £43,024; the population in 1881 was, ecclesiastical parish, 2,970; township, 10,282.
