Historical Description

THORNLEY is a township and parish, formed May 14, 1844, from the parish of Kelloe, situated 1 ½ miles south-west from Thornley station on the Sunderland and Hartlepool branch of the North Eastern railway, 7 east from Durham by road, 11 north-west from Hartlepool, and 14 south from Sunderland by railway, in the South Eastern division of the county, Easington ward and union, Castle Eden petty sessional division, county court district of Durham, rural deanery of Easington, and archdeaconry and diocese of Durham. There is a goods station here on the North Eastern railway. The church of St. Bartholomew, erected in 1843, at a cost of £2,000, is a plain building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, western porch and a turret containing one bell: the interior was restored and beautified and a chancel screen erected in 1883, at a cost of £500: there are stained memorial windows at the east end to the late Henry John Shearman, d. 1866, and on the south side to George Wilkinson esq. of Oswald house, d. June 18,1866, erected by parishioners and friends: there are 500 sittings. The register dates from the year 1844. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £290, with residence and 1 ¾ acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Durham, and held since 1862 by the Rev. William Mayor M.A. of Durham University and J.P. county Durham. The Catholic chapel, dedicated to St. Godric, is a plain building, and will seat 400 persons. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels, the former, a structure of brick, rebuilt in 1865, at a cost of £1,000, and seating 400 persons; the latter, with Sunday schools attached, is an edifice of brick, erected in 1871, affording 700 sittings. The village was chiefly supported by the extensive coal mines and coke ovens, which have now (1889) been closed for some years, causing it to become much depopulated and the houses to be shut up. The colliery has recently, however, been acquired by the Weardale Iron and Coal Co. Limited, who are about to re-open the pits. The institute and news-room here is at present (1889) closed.

Major Henry Charles Spearman is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is heavy; the subsoil, limestone. The crops are of the usual kind. The area of the township is 1,148 acres; rateable value, £2,318; the population in 1881 was 3,132; the area of the ecclesiastical parish is 2,000 acres; the population in 1881 was 5,982.

Parish Clerk, George Johnson.
