The church of St. Mary Magdalene is a very ancient building of stone, given by Hugh Pudsey, Bishop of Durham, in 1164, to the monastery of Guisborough; it consists of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and a small turret containing one bell: the church was repaired and re-pewed in 1806, and again in 1887, a vestry and a new stone font being added: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1720. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £206, with residence, in the gift of John Beckwith esq. of Silksworth House, Sunderland, and held since 1884 by the Rev.
