Historical Description

USWORTH is a township in the parish of Washington, now formed into an ecclesiastical parish, which includes Great and Little Usworth and a portion of Springwell, in the Chester-le-Street division of the county, east division of Chester ward, Chester-le-Street petty sessional division and union, county court district of Gateshead, rural deanery of Chester and archdeaconry and diocese of Durham. Great Usworth is one mile west from Usworth station on the main line of the North Eastern railway, 7 west from Sunderland, and 5 south from Gateshead. The church of the Holy Trinity, erected in 1832, is a plain rectangular building of stone, consisting of nave, west porch, and a western turret containing one bell: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1835. The living was declared a rectory Dec, 18, 1866, average tithe rent-charge £126, yearly value £300, with residence, in the gift of the rector of Washington, and held since 1879 by the Rev. Michael Maude Simpson M.A. of Oriel College, Oxford. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels here. Mrs. Susan Peareth’s charity of £30 yearly, originally left by her as an endowment for the church school, has, since its conversion into a Board school in 1878, been applied under a new scheme by the Charity Commissioners to the support of the night school, and in prizes, awards and exhibitions to public elementary schools: the remaining charities amount to £3 3s. yearly. There are extensive collieries in the township. Viscount Boyne, the Earl of Ravensworth and Sir Wilfrid Lawson bart. M.P. are the principal landowners. The soil is heavy clay; subsoil, freestone. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area of the township is 2,134 acres; rateable value, £13,151; the population in 1881 was 4,606. The area of the ecclesiastical parish is 2,023 acres; the population in 1881 was 4,606.

By a Local Government Order, dated December 20, 1880, a detached part of this township known as North Biddick was transferred to Harraton township.

A School Board of 5 members, for the district of Great & Little Usworth, was formed Nov. 26, 1875; Frederick Harle, 4 Side, Newcastle-on-Tyne, clerk to the board.
