Historical Description

WASHINGTON is a parish, township and considerable village, situated near the navigable river Wear, here crossed by a stone bridge, called the Victoria Bridge, of 5 arches, with a station on the main line of the North Eastern railway, 7 miles west from Sunderland, 7 south-east from Newcastle, and 10 north-east from Durham, in the Chester-le-Street division of the county, in the ward and union of Chester-le-Street, petty sessional division and county court district of Gateshead, rural deanery of Chester-le-Street, and archdeaconry and diocese of Durham. The church of the Holy Trinity, rebuilt in 1833 at a cost of £1,000, and enlarged in 1883 at a further cost of about £2,000, is a building of stone, in the Pointed style, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts and south porch: in a recess at the west end are 2 bells: there are 430 sittings. The churchyard is surrounded by very fine sycamore trees. The register dates from the year 1603. The living is a rectory, gross yearly value £730, net £375, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Manchester, and held since 1875 by the Rev.Rennell Francis Wynn Molesworth M.A. of Brasenose College, Oxford. Here is a Catholic chapel, dedicated to Our Lady Immaculate; and also a Wesleyan chapel. Triplett’s charity of £22 yearly, is for apprenticing, and there are other charities of £6 6s. for distribution in money. In this township are an extensive colliery and chemical works, iron works, and a bath brick manufactory. Robert Duncombe Shafto esq. D.L., J.P. W. Wykeham Musgrave esq. and Sir Wilfrid Lawson bart. M.P. are joint lords of the manor and chief landowners. The soil is very various; subsoil, mixed loam and sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area of the township is 1,973 acres; rateable value, 14,059; the population in 1881 was 3,022.
