Historical Description

WHICKHAM, anciently “Quicham” or “Quykham,” is a parish, situated on the road from Newcastle to Shotley Bridge and about 2 miles from the river Tyne, 3 ½ miles west-south-west from Gateshead, in the Chester-le-Street division of the county, west division of Chester ward, Gateshead union and petty sessional division, county court district of Newcastle-on-Tyne, rural deanery of Ryton and archdeaconry and diocese of Durham. The Local Government Act (1858), 21 and 22 Viet. c. 98, was adopted here March 23, 1875. The district is controlled by a Local Board of Health of 12 members. The church of St. Mary is an ancient edifice of stone in the Norman and Transition styles, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles and a low embattled western tower, containing a clock and 6 bells, three of which, with the clock, were presented in 1889, at a cost of upwards of £300, in memory of the late R. Carr-Ellison esq. of Dunston hill: the chancel arch is Norman and has cushion capitals enriched with a flower ornament: on the north side of the arch is a hagiscope; the arcades are Transitional, and there is an early font: in the church is a monument to Robert Thomlinson D.D. prebendary of St. Paul’s, and 36 years rector here, d. 24 March, 1747; there are mural monuments to Sir James Clavering, of Axwell bart; Sir Thomas Clavering, of Axwell bart. ob. October 1794, and Martha his wife, ob. 16 August, 1792: in the chancel is a memorial window erected by the late Mr. Joseph A. Hymers to his wife, and there are four other stained windows: the organ was introduced in 1869, and in 1875 a reredos was erected by Ralph Brown esq, of Benwell Tower, Newcastle-on-Tyne: the church was thoroughly restored in 1862 at a cost of £2,700, and has sittings for 550 persons. At the west end of the churchyard are two grave slabs removed from a field in the parish in 1784, by Mr. Robert. Hodgson, druggist, of London; they respectively bear marginal inscriptions to George Hodgson, ob. 1 December, 1667, and Aibiah, his daughter, ob. 6 February, 1669. The register dates from the year 1576. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £339, net yearly value £391, including 117 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1846 by the Rev. Henry Byne Carr M.A. of University College, Oxford, hon. canon of Durham and surrogate. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels and a Wesleyan chapel at Fellside. The charities are about £30 yearly value. Gibside, situated about 2 miles from Whickham church, was anciently held by the Marley and Blakiston families: the mansion is a noble edifice of stone, delightfully situated on the banks of the Derwent, amidst a forest of plantations, but is at present (1889) unoccupied; the south front, which has been rebuilt, is embattled and has mullioned bay windows; in the drawing-room is a fine mantelpiece, supported by terminal figures of Samson and Hercules, and above are the arms of Sir William Blakiston, who died in February, 1607-8, and was buried at Whickham. East of the house, a handsome Doric column, 140 feet in height, surmounted by a figure of Liberty 12 feet high, stands conspicuously in the grounds. Nature and Art have combined to make the scenery in the locality attractive. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor, and the Earl of Ravensworth, Capt. Sir Henry Augustus Clavering bart. R.N. of Axwell Park, and the trustees of the lale John Bowes esq. D.L. of Streatlam Castle, and John Ralph Carr-Ellison esq. J.P. of Dunston Hill, are the chief landowners. The soil is clay and loam; subsoil, sandstone. The chief crops are wheat, barley oats and pasture. The area of the parish is 5,993 acres; rateable value, £28,334. The population in 1871 was 6,482 and in 1881, 7,975.

A School Board of 7 members was formed 26 March, 1873; the board meets in the parish offices on the first Monday in the month; William Willis, clerk.

National School, Whickham, Tomlinson & Blakiston Endowed Schools (mixed), for 130 boys & 120 girls; average attendance, 99 boys & 94 girls.
