Historical Description

The township and chapelry of Winlaton; this town, before the introduction of the iron works, consisted only of a few deserted cottages; but by the last returns contained 578 houses, and 3,295 inhabitants, of whom 468 were returned as being employed in trade and manufacture.

To the north of Winlaton, is Winlaton Mills, originally built for grinding corn, but having been appropriated to the use of the iron works, have since given rise to a pleasant village of the same name.

To the south of this village, on the eastern bank of the Derwent, is Gibside, the principal seat of the late Earl of Strathmore, now of the Countess Dowager; the mansion contains some excellent paintings. The approach to the house is by a serpentine road, nearly a mile in length, winding through a forest of venerable oaks; and the park is about four miles in circumference.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

WINLATON is an extensive parish, constituted out of the old parish of Ryton, October 7, 1834, and situated on an eminence, 420 feet high, on the western bank of the Derwent: it comprises the township of Chopwell, and the hamlets of Barlow, Winlaton Mill and Derwenthaugh, the latter being in Stella ecclesiastical parish. Winlaton is 280 miles from London, 1 ½ south-west from Blaydon station on the Newcastle and Carlisle branch of the North Eastern railway, 5 west from Gateshead and 5 ½ west from Newcastle: it is in the Chester-le-Street division of the county, west division of Chester Ward, Gateshead petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Ryton and archdeaconry and diocese of Durham. The church of St. Paul, erected in 1828, at a cost of £2,500, is an edifice of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 6 bells, five of which were presented by Robert Belt esq. of Winlaton: all the stained windows are memorials to inhabitants of the parish, including one to Mrs. Wardell, wife of the late rector: there are 800 sittings. The register dates from the year 1828. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £293, net yearly value £300, including 18 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Chester, and held since 1884 by the Rev. Park Head Hall, the seat and property of John Taylor Ramsay esq. situated about a quarter of a mile from the village, is a handsome stone building, having some delightful views of the Gibside woods. There are several collieries in this parish, and some quarries of excellent stone. The extensive fire brick and retort works of Messrs. Joseph Cowen and Co. are at Blaydon Burn, half a mile in est of the village. Here are also several large firms, who manufacture all kinds of iron work for ship building purposes, forgings, chain cables, hinges, screws, bolts, spades, shovels, thimbles, shackles and every variety of black ironmongery. The Towneley Trustees, the Marquess of Bute K.T. Capt. Sir Henry Augustus Clavering bart. R.N. of Axwell Park, Wentworth Blackett Beaumont esq. M.P., D.L., J.P. of Bretton Hall, Wakefield, the trustees of the late Buddie Atkinson esq. Joseph Cowen esq. of Stella Hall, and the trustees of the late John Bowes esq. of Streatlam Castle, are lords of the manor. The trustees of the Towneley estate are chief landowners. The soil is a clayey loam; subsoil, clay and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and some land in pasture. The area is 5,217 acres; rateable value, £33,507. The population of the township in 1871 was 7,492, and in 1881 was 8,330.
