Historical Description

WINSTON is a parish, including the villages of Newsham and WINSTON, situated on the ridge of a hill overlooking the Tees, 6 miles east from Barnard Castle, 15 east from Darlington and 12 north from Richmond, with a station on the Darlington section of the North-Eastern railway, in the Barnard Castle division of the county, south-west division of Darlington ward, Teesdale union, Barnard Castle county court district and petty sessional division, rural deanery of Darlington, archdeaconry of Auckland and diocese of Durham. The Tees is here crossed by a fine stone bridge of a single arch forming a segment of a circle, 112 feet span, 22 feet broad, and 20 feet between the parapet walls, and was erected in 1763-4, from the designs of Sir Thomas Robinson bart. of Rokeby; and when most of the bridges in the north of England were washed away by the great flood in 1771, Winston bridge remained uninjured. The church of St. Andrew, situated on elevated ground to the east of the village, is an edifice of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, south porch and an octagonal tower with spire containing 2 bells: the whole of the south aisle and a great part of the nave were rebuilt, and the tower added in 1848: in the chancel is a piscina, with ball flower ornament: the font dates from about the year 1260, and there are 232 sittings: in the churchyard are the remains of an ancient cross. The register dates from the year 1572. The living is a rectory, yearly value £390, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Durham, and held since 1884 by the Rev. Frederick Edmund Sadgrove A.K.C. Stubb House, the property and residence of John Harrison Stanton esq. pleasantly situated in grounds of about 8 acres, on the north side of the river Tees, was erected about a century since on the site of a much older mansion, of which there are still some remains. Westholme Hall, the property of Jeremiah Abbs esq. of 3 Grange Crescent, Sunderland, situated near the railway station, is an old residence of the Elizabethan period, in a good state of preservation, and is now in the occupation of Mr. John Abbs. The Earl Brownlow P.C. who is lord of the manor, the Earl Strathmore, William Thomas Hustler esq. J.P. of Acklam Hall, John H. Stanton, Jeremiah Abbs esq. of Westholme Hall land W. Temple Bourne esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is strong, firm soil; subsoil, loose sandstone. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 2,961 acres; rateable value, £5,007 10s.; the population in 1881 was 334.

Parochial School (mixed), a building of stone, erected in 1851, endowed by Lady Alford as a memorial to her husband; it will hold 87 children; average attendance, 60; has an endowment of about £10 yearly.
