Historical Description

WITTON GILBERT is a parish, occupying a pleasant situation in a warm, sheltered valley on the road from Durham to Lanchester, with a station about one mile from the village on the Durham and Consett branch of the North Eastern railway, 3 ½ miles north-west from Durham and 5 ½ south-west from Chester-le-Street, in the Mid division of the county, western division of Chester ward, petty sessional division and county court district of Durham, Chester-le-Street union, rural deanery, archdeaconry and diocese of Durham. The church of St. Michael was taken down (with the exception of the chancel) and rebuilt in 1863: the present building is of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle and a western turret containing 2 bells: there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1572 and is in good and perfect condition. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £253, gross yearly value £332, including 25 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Durham, and held since 1889 by the Rev. Arthur Watts of the University of Durham. There is a Methodist New Connexion chapel here. The reading room, formerly a schoolroom, is well supplied with the local papers, magazines &c. There are charities to the amount of £4 yearly. Here was formerly a small hospital for lepers founded by Bishop Pudsey. Witton Hall now occupies the site. At Earls house is the County Industrial school. The chief landowners are the Dean and Chapter of Durham, the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, the Earl of Durham and the University of Durham, each of whom claim manorial rights, but there are several small freeholders. The soil is sandy and gravelly and loamy; the subsoil, gravelly and sandy. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, turnips and potatoes. The area of the parish is 2,535 acres; rateable value, £11,170; the population in 1881 was 3,430.
