The mansion, which was built on the foundation of the ancient edifice, and greatly enlarged and improved by the present noble proprietor, now forms an elegant residence, and the walks and pleasure grounds, by the judicious intermixture of wood and water, are rendered extremely pleasant.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

WOLVISTON is a township, village and parish, formed June 17, 1860, from the parish of Billingham, pleasantly situated on the road from Stockton to Sunderland, 5 miles north from Stockton and 2 north from Billingham station on the Port Clarence branch of the North Eastern railway, in the South Eastern division of the county, north-eastern division of Stockton ward, Stockton petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Hartlepool, archdeaconry of Auckland and diocese of Durham. The church of St. Peter, built in 1876, on a commanding eminence, is a modern edifice of brick, consisting of nave, north porch and a turret containing one bell: in the chancel are three stained memorial windows: there are 200 sittings. The register extant dates from the year 1759. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £198, net yearly value £320, including 83 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Durham, and held since 1886 by the Rev. Edmund Lyde Butcher L.Th. of Hatfield Hall, Durham, and surrogate. There are Wesleyan and Free Methodist chapels here. Wolviston House, the residence of Ernest Alfred Webster esq. is pleasantly situated at the entrance to the village, in extensive pleasure grounds, which are tastefully laid. The Dean and Chapter of Durham (who are lords of the manor), with the Ecclesiastical Commissioners and the Marquess of Londonderry K.G. , P.C. are the principal landowners. The soil is various; subsoil, partly clay and partly gravel and sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, beans and peas. The area is 2,446 acres; rateable value, £3,247; the population in 1881 of the township was 605.
