Historical Description

The village of Bocking, which forms the northern suburb, consists chiefly of a single street of considerable length, extending along the road, and having many excellent houses, which are inhabited by several wealthy and respectable inhabitants; the lower order is supported by the baize manufacture. The parish of Bocking is a peculiar annexed to the archbishopric of Canterbury, and the principal among the lour peculiars in this and the three in the County of Suffolk, belonging to the see of Canterbury. Bocking is only subject to the archbishop’s jurisdiction, or that of his commissary, who is called the Dean of Bocking. The Church, which is a spacious building, stands upon an eminence at the distance of between one and two miles northwest of the village, and is supposed to have been founded about the reign of Edward III.

Braintree contains 621 houses, and 2,983 inhabitants.

Bocking contains 588 houses, and 2,766 inhabitants.

BOCKING, on the Pant, Fresh well, or Blackwater river, on which are several corn mills, constitutes the northern part of the town, consisting principally of one long street, the Coggeshall and Rayne roads forming the boundary. In the time of King Ethelred this parish belonged to Ethelred and Leofwin, who granted it to St. Saviour’s Priory, Canterbury.

The church of St. Mary the Virgin is a large edifice of flint with Bath stone dressings in the Perpendicular style, and consists of chancel with vestry, clerestoried nave of four bays, aisles, south porch and a large embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing a clock and a musical peal of 6 bells; there are piscinae and several stained memorial windows: in the south chantry is the brass of John Doreward esq. ob. 1420, son of Sir William Doreward and his wife Isabella, but without inscription, and on the chancel pavement is another to Oswald Fitch, ob. 1612: in the north aisle of the chancel is a marble monument consisting of a pediment supported on columns and beneath it a kneeling female figure, representing the wife of Adrian Moore esq. who died 1624: another marble monument in the same aisle is inscribed to Prisca, relict of Thomas Cobourne, of Stratford-le-Bow, gent.; in the churchyard is a tomb erected to John Maysent, gent, of Booking Hall, with a poetical inscription: in 1883 the church was reseated and the western window filled with stained glass at the sole expense of Wm. Walford esq.: and in 1884 the baptistery window was filled with stained glass by the late Rev. Charles Almeric Belli M.A. vicar of South Weald (1823—77), who died in 1886: the stained east window was provided by subscription; there are five others in the chancel given by Dean Carrington and the members of his family, one by William Walford esq. and one in the north aisle by Mrs. Wakeham, widow of a former dean: the paintings over the altar are by William H. Fuge esq: there, are about 1,000 sittings. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £360, with residence and 113 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1845 by the Very Rev. Henry Carrington M.A. of Caius College, Cambridge, who is dean and rector: the dean of Bocking formerly had jurisdiction over this and other peculiars of the province of Canterbury with Essex.

The Church of St. Peter, Bocking, was erected in 1897 as a chapel of ease to the parish church, on a site given by a lady resident in the parish, and is an edifice of brick and stone, consecrated June 19th, 1897, and will seat about 350 persons. The late Miss Frances Wakeham of Marshalls, Braintree, left by will the sum of £4,500 for the building of an additional church in the parish of Bocking, on condition that no part of the legacy was to be used for the purchase of the site, and a further sum of £5,000 was also left by Miss Wakeham as an endowment. The living is an incumbency, net yearly value £193, in the gift of the Dean and Rector of Bocking, but subsequently the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1896 by the Rev. Henry John Shildrick M.A. of Durham University, and chaplain of Braintree Union.

The Society of Friends’ meeting-house in Rayne road, erected in 1863, is an edifice of white brick, with freestone dressings.

The Catholic Church of St. Francis and the Immaculate Conception, of red brick, was erected in 1899. The Franciscan Convent, enlarged in 1898, adjoins the church.

The Congregational church, in Bradford street, is a structure of white brick, erected in 1707 and enlarged in 1818, and will seat about 1,000 persons: over the pulpit is a marble tablet to the Rev. Thomas Craig, for more than 62 years pastor here, who died 2 June, in the 85th year of bis age: the schools near the chapel were built to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Rev. Thomas Craig’s ministry, October 12th, 1852: a mission room in connection with the church was opened in 1894, and will seat 200 persons: attached to the church is a small cemetery.

The Congregational chapel in Church street, erected in 1862, is a small edifice of white brick.

The Unitarian chapel in the Coggeshall road, is an iron structure.

The general cemetery, formed in 1857, and enlarged in 1882 by 1 ½ acres, making it now 3 ½ acres in extent, is under the control of the Parish Council.

The Workmen’s Hall is a building of red brick with stone dressings, erected in 1884 by Messrs. Courtauld for the use of their workpeople.

The Fire Brigade consists of a superintendent and 4 men, the engine being kept at the “Black Boy” inn yard, Church street.

The crape and silk factory belonging to Samuel Courtauld and Co. gives employment to a large number of hands.

There is a almshouse for 8 persons.

The endowed charities for general distribution now (1902) produce about £300 yearly.

Bocking Place, a mansion of brick surrounded by pleasure grounds of 19 acres, with a lodge entrance, is the seat of Mrs. Sydney Courtauld.

Bocking Hall, the residence of Charles J. Bolton esq. is an ancient timbered structure with rooms panelled in oak and in a fine state of preservation.

Monken Hadley is the residence of Francis Henry Crittall esq.

George Bradley esq. of Ackton Hall, Pontefract, Yorks, is lord of the manor; the principal landowners are the trustees of the late Mrs. Honywood, Henry Samuel Tabor esq. John English Tabor esq. J.P. the trustees of the late Sydney Courtauld esq. J.P. (d. 1899), James Paxman esq. J.P. of Stisted Hall, and Lieut.-Col. S. G. Savill J.P.

The area is 4,613 acres of land and 26 of water; rateable value, £11,229; the population in 1901 was 3,345, which includes the officers and inmates in Braintree Union workhouse.

Petty sessions are held every alternate Wednesday, at the Police station, Fairfield road, at 12 noon & every alternate Tuesday at Halstead. The places in the division are Braintree, Bocking, Black Notley, Felstead, Great Saling, Panfield, Rayne, Shalford, Stisted & Wethersfield.

BRAINTREE UNION

A School Board of 5 members was formed 23 Dec. 1872 for Bocking; Edward Holmes, Bocking End, Bocking, clerk to the board; George Elger, Bradford street, Bocking, attendance officer.

Board School, Manor street, Braintree, for 800 children, including infants; average attendance, 185 boys, 150 girls & 120 infants. The buildings & ground were given by the late J. Courtauld esq. who also left £40 a year for the support of the school; the endowment is now devoted to a scholarship from the Elementary Schools of the parishes of Braintree & Bocking, which entitles the holder to be educated in some higher grade school.

Board, Bocking End, for 420 children, including infants; average attendance, 140 boys & girls & 60 infants.

Board School, High Garrett, erected by the late Samuel Courtauld esq. for 150, children; average attendance, 63.

National, New street, Braintree (mixed & infants), enlarged in 1879 & 1881, for 650 children; average attendance, 510.

National, Church street, Bocking (girls’), for 200 children, including infants; average attendance, 137; with this school is incorporated the school founded by Dr. Gauden, a former rector of Bocking, & successively bishop of Exeter (1660) & Worcester (1662).
