Historical Description

The pleasant village of Boreham, which from its name Morant conjectures to have been a market town, under the Saxon dynasty. In the church here are inhumed the bodies of Robert Ratcliffe, Viscount Fitzwalter, Earl of Sussex, and his wife, with their sons Thomas and Henry; the former of whom erected the chapel here, with a sumptuous monument, having his own effigies with that of his father and grandfather, whose bodies he removed hither. The estate being sold out of the family, this monument became neglected and ruinous, and the vault falling in, exposed 12 bodies, wrapt in lead like mummies. Upon the breast of one of these Gough informs us he saw in 1760, the following inscription in raised capitals.

Thomas Comis Sussex Vicecomes Fitzwalter, Dominus de Egremond and Burnell, &c.

Obiit IX Junii anno. dni. 1583, AEt. o. 57.

A neat octagonal mausoleum belonging to the Waltham family, stands in the church-yard; it is built of stone and white brick, with the following inscription on its front:

Mausoleum

Gentis Walthemianae

M.DCC.LXIV.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

BOREHAM is a parish on the road from Chelmsford to Colchester, contiguous to the navigable river Chelmer, 3 ¾ miles north-east from the Chelmsford station and 33 miles from London, in the Mid division of the county, Chelmsford hundred, union, petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Chelmsford, archdeaconry of Essex and diocese of St. Albans. The church of St. Andrew is a building of flint and stone in Mixed styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a central embattled Norman tower with pinnacles, and containing a clock and 6 bells: the clock, which strikes the quarters as well as the hour, was placed in the tower in 1884: the Sussex chapel, in which are monuments of the Radcliffes, Barons and Viscounts Fitzwalter, Earls of Sussex, a title extinct on the death of Edward, 6th earl, in 1641, has been rebuilt. On the north side of the church is a vault of the Tyrell family, restored in 1895 by William Tufnell esq. of Hatfield place: there are 460 sittings: in the churchyard is a mausoleum in the Classic style belonging to the Waltham family and a cross of Sicilian marble eight feet in height, erected by the parishioners to the Ven. Gaspard le Marchant Carey M.A. vicar here 1874—85, hon. canon of St. Albans and archdeacon of Essex, who died March 17, 1885. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £290, with 18 acres of glebe, and residence, in the gift of the Bishop of St. Albans, and held since 1885 by the Rev. Denys Nelson Yonge B.A. of Christ’s College, Cambridge. Here is a Congregational chapel. Two of the almshouses in the parish of Stock are appropriated to the poor of this parish. Butler’s charity is an endowment of £100 yearly, for educational purposes, left in 1717 by Edward Butler, of Little Baddow, to provide such clothes, books and education for the poor children of Little Baddow and Boreham as the trustees of the charity shall decide. Boreham House, on the east of the road, is the residence of Lieut.-Col. John Lionel Tufnell-Tyrell D.L., J.P.: the mansion is approached by two avenues of trees, and there is a fine lake and a park of 100 acres, containing a herd of deer.

New Hall, in this parish, to the north-west, a royal residence in the reigns of Henry VII. and VIII. was granted in the reign of Elizabeth to Sir Thomas Ratcliffe K.G. 3rd Earl of Sussex, and afterwards passed into the possession of George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham; on the attainder of whose son it became the property of the Lord Protector, Oliver Cromwell and was exchanged by him for Hampton Court; at the restoration it was purchased by George Monk, Duke of Albemarle K.G., it is now a Catholic convent and school, with an attached chapel, dedicated to the Holy Sepulchre of Our Lord. There are two manors; R. T. E. P. Haselfoot esq. is lord of the manor of old Hall and the trustees of the late James Parker esq. are the lords of the manor of East Beaulieu. The principal landowners are Lieut.-Col. J. L. Tufnell-Tyrell D.L., R. T. E. P. Haselfoot esq. and Captain John Desborough Pearson Walford. Gosnall, of Mount Maskall. The soil is mixed; subsoil, gravel and clay. The chief crops are wheat, beans, barley, oats, and turnips. The area is 3,781 acres of land and 20 of water; rateable value, £9,568; the population in 1901, including those in New Hall Convent, was 820.

Schools

National (mixed), built about 1840, for 120 children; average attendance, 82.
