Historical Description

BOXTED is a parish, bounded on the north by the navigable river Stour, which separates it from Suffolk, 4 miles north from Colchester station and 7 west from Manningtree, in the North Eastern division of the county, Lexden and Winstree hundred, union and petty sessional division, Colchester county court district, rural deanery of Dedham, archdeaconry of Colchester and diocese of St. Albans. A brook runs through the parish.

The church of St. Peter, a brick and stone building in the Norman style, consists of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, containing 2 bells: in the church is a fine marble monument to Sir Richard Blackmore M.D. of Padua, physician in ordinary to Wm. III. by whom he was knighted in 1697; he was also physician to Queen Anne, and was the author of numerous works, medical, theological and poetical; of the latter, the “Creation” has been several times reprinted; he died Oct. 9th, 1729; the monument has long Latin inscriptions in verse to Sir Richard and his wife, Mary: there are other tablets to the Rev. Mr. Cook, a former vicar, and to Nathaniel Bacon, dated 1600: the church has 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £158, with 27 acres of glebe, and residence, in the gift of the Bishop of St. Albans, and held since 1882 by the Rev. William Longmore Watts A.K.C.Lond. Here is a Wesleyan chapel. There are almshouses for two poor persons. A sum of £13, arising from a share of the charity left in 1564 by Thomas Love, of Little Horkesley, is distributed yearly in coals and money. Another charity, consisting of the rent of a field in the parish, together with a contribution from Love’s gift, is distributed at Christmas to the poor widows of the parish in sums of 5s. The Lodge, Boxted, the seat of Lieut.-Col. Augustine Hugh Lefroy J.P. is a mansion of white brick, in grounds of about 20 acres. Boxted House is the residence of Percy Crossman esq. Boxted Hall, an ancient mansion, is now occupied by Mr. Alan Stanford, farmer. Rivers Hall, the oldest house in the parish, is now occupied by Mr. William George Scragg, farmer. Richard Henry Wood esq. F.S.A, of Belmont, Sidmouth, who is lord of the manor of Rivers Hall, the trustees of the late Henry Hobbs, William Page, Charles Strutt and Joseph Blomfield esqrs. Miss Sarah Lawson and William Nocton esq. of Langham Hall, are the principal landowners. The soil is mixed; subsoil, loam. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, beans, turnips and mangold wurtzel. The area is 3,177 acres of land and 11 of water; rateable value, £3,156; the population in 1901 was 680.
