Historical Description

Buers, or Bures, an ancient royal village, where, according to Galfridus de Fontibus, St. Edmund (who was murdered by the Danes) was crowned king of the East Angles. The church and spire at Buers were, formerly a great ornament to the village, but in the year 1733 the latter was set on fire by lightning, and burned down to the steeple, which was much damaged, the bells melted, and the frames consumed. In a tomb on the north side of this church, lies the cross-legged figure of a knight, according to tradition, named Cornard, and who is said to have sold a farm in this parish, called Corn-hall, for fourpence, in the time of Henry III. The monuments of the Buers, who took their name from this place, are to he seen here. Several of the Walgrave family are also interred in this church; as Sir Richard Walgrave, knight, who died in 1400, and Joanna, his wife, in 1406, to the inscription on whose tomb is added: "He that prays for others, labours for himself."

A legacy of 2000l. was left by William Martin, esq. of Lincoln’s-inn Fields, London, in the hands of certain trustees; and from the interest of this as well as other things, the sum of 40l. was bequeathed to be annually paid to the vicar of this parish, and his successors for ever.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

BURES ST. MARY is a town and parish on the navigable Stour, which here divides the county from Essex, and over which there is a bridge leading to Halstead, with a station in Bures Hamlet, Essex, on the Sudbury and Marks Tey section of the Great Eastern railway, 4 ½ miles south-east from Sudbury by rail and 5 ½ by road, 53 from London by rail, in the Southern division of the county, Boxford petty sessional division, Sudbury union and county court district, Babergh hundred, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely. The church of St. Mary is a flint building in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel with side chapel, nave, aisles, north and south porches and an embattled western tower with pinnacles containing a clock and 6 bells: in 1733 the tower, which dates from the early part of the 13th century, was struck by lightning and the spire destroyed: in the church is a tomb with a cross-legged effigy, said to represent one of the Cornards, whose body is believed to be buried in the wall itself underneath where the effigy now stands: within the altar rails is the tomb of Sir William Waldegrave, and who lived at Smallbridge Hall, in this parish, temp. Henry VIII.: the side chapel, known as the “Waldegrave chantry,” was founded in 1514 by Sir William Waldegrave, a descendant of the above, for masses to be said for the repose of the souls of the Waldegrave family: the church was restored in 1865; in 1891, when the chancel, which dates from the 14th century, was internally restored and carved oak stalls provided: there are 750 sittings, 369 being free. The register dates from, the year 1538. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £200, including 9 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Mrs. Reginald Hill, and held since 1888 by the Rev. William Henry Edward Ricketts Jervis. Here is a Baptist chapel, built in 1831, with 450 sittings, which has a small burial ground attached, now disused. A cemetery of 2 acres was formed in 1871, at a cost of £150, and is now under the control of the Parish Council. A. new Public Hall was erected in 1890. The almshouses were built in 1866 for four couples, and endowed by the late W. Atkinson esq. On the river is a roller flour mill. According to Galfridus de Fontibus, who wrote not long after the commencement of the 12th century, Edmund the Martyr, King of the East Angles, was crowned here Dec. 25th, 855, the ceremony being performed in a church, the site of which is now occupied by a bam, standing about three-quarters of a mile north of the village, and originally a chapel built about 1190 by Abbot Sampson, of Bury Abbey. Smallbridge Hall, now a farmhouse, situated about 1 ½ miles from the village, is a good example of Early Elizabethan work, and was the seat of the Waldegrave family, who in 1561 and in 1579 entertained Queen Elizabeth here while on progress. Mrs. Reginald Hill, who is lady of the manor and lay impropriator, W. S. Green esq. Mr. B. Simpson and Lieut.-Col. Walter St. George Burke R.E. of Auberies, near Sudbury, and Sir Joshua Thellusson Rowley bart. of Tendring Hall, and William Garrad esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is light; subsoil, sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 2,554 acres of land and 20 of water; rateable value, £3,690; the population in 1890 was 906, not including the hamlet.
