Historical Description

CRANHAM is a parish, pleasantly situated 1 mile east of Upminster station on the Tilbury and Southend railway and 4 ½ miles south-east from the Romford station on the Great Eastern railway, in the Mid division of the county, Brentwood petty sessional division north of the London and Tilbury railway, and Romford petty sessional division south of the same, Chafford hundred, Romford union and county court district, rural deanery of Chafford, archdeaconry of Essex and diocese of St. Albans. The church of All Saints, rebuilt by Richard Benyon esq. at his sole cost, on the site of the older church, was re-opened December, 1874, and is an edifice of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and on the north side a tower with spire, containing 3 bells: all the windows in the chancel and the west window are filled with stained glass: in the chancel is a monument to Major-General James Edward Oglethorpe, of Westbrook Place, Surrey, who obtained the manor of Cranham Hall by his marriage with Elizabeth, daughter and heiress of Sir Nathan Wright bart. whose predecessor. Sir Benjamin Wright, 1st bart. bought it of the Petres: he was the founder, in 1733, of the colony of Georgia, N. America, for which he obtained a Royal charter: he died 30th June, 1785, at the age, it is said of 102, and is buried here with his wife: there is a piscina in the south wall and a Teredos with a sculptured representation of “The Last Supper”: the old oaken communion table was restored by the Rev. L. L. Sharp, rector 1884—9. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £380, with 35 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of St. John's College, Oxford, and held since 1889 by the Rev. Charles John Rashleigh Cooke M.A. of Oriel College, Oxford, Coombe Lodge, a modern mansion, situated on an eminence commanding fine views of the surrounding country and enclosed in well-designed pleasure grounds, is the residence of Edward Murray Ind. Beredens, an old restored manor house, the property and residence of R. T. Stoneham esq. is on an eminence at the foot of Foxburrow Wood, and commands fine and extensive views. George Rastrick esq. of Woking Lodge, Woking, Surrey, is lord of the manor. James Herbert Benyon esq. of Englefield Park, Berks, is chief landowner. The soil is a very heavy loam; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, beans, peas &c. The area is 1,875 acres; rateable value, £3,317; the population in 1901 was 397.

Large steam brick and tile works, the property of the Cranham Brick and Tile Co. Ltd. were built in 1900, and employ about 70 hands.

School (mixed), erected in 1870, partly at the cost of R. Benyon esq. for 115 children; average attendance, 76; an adult night school is held three times a week, free to all & maintained by the County Council.
