Historical Description
CRESSING is a village and parish, on a small feeder of the Blackwater, 1 mile east from Bulford station, on the Maldon, Witham and Braintree branch of the Great Eastern railway, 3 south-east from Braintree and 5 north from Witham and Kelvedon, in the Eastern division of the county, Witham petty sessional division and hundred, Braintree union and county court district, rural deanery of Witham, archdeaconry of Colchester and diocese of St. Albans, and formerly belonged to King Harold II. The church of All Saints is a small edifice of flint and stone, chiefly in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, vestry, south porch and a small western turret, with shingled spire, containing 1 bell: the church was restored and reseated by subscription in 1868, at a cost of £600: the chancel retains a piscina, and on the south wall is an alabaster monument, erected by Henry Smith, of Cressing Temple, to his wife Hannah and dated 1607: it bears figures in bas-relief of a knight kneeling before an open book upon a table, while opposite is a lady in a similar attitude, and underneath, a child in a winding sheet, with the figure of a maiden in the attitude of prayer; near to this, on the chancel pavement, is a large stone containing a brass, exceedingly well engraved, of a lady standing before a table with her right hand resting upon an hour-glass; at her feet lies an infant, apparently dead, and below is an inscription in Latin to “Dorcas Musgrave, daughter of William Bigg, gent, of Topsfield, Essex, and wife of Thomas Musgrave esq. of Norton, Yorks; she died in childbirth, 11 Aug. 1610, aged 23:” suspended near the roof are two ancient helmets: there are 221 sittings. The register dates from the year 1754. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £150, with 3 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the vicar of Witham, and held since 1884 by the Rev. Charles James O’Reilly B.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. Here are two chapels for the Peculiar People. The Knights Templars, who at one time had a commandery or preceptory here, called Cressing Temple, founded about 1150, possessed the advowson; it subsequently passed to the Knights Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem and reverted to the Crown at the general suppression of religious houses. Mrs. Ford, who is lady of the manor of Crossing Temple, and Jeffery Grimwood Grimwood esq. of 29 Ennismore gardens, London S W, Thomas Cousins esq. Sir Thomas C. C. Western bart. the Misses Brown and J. N. Paxman esq. J.P. of Stisted Hall, are the chief landowners. The soil is a rich loam; subsoil, clay and loam. The chief crops are wheat, beans and barley. The area is 2,592 acres; rateable value, £2,022; the population in 1901 was 565.
A School Board of 5 members was formed Dec. 21, 1899; Frederick Smoothby, Braintree, clerk to the board; Mr. H. J. Gibbs, Braintree, school attendance officer.
