Historical Description

GOOD EASTER (or Estre) is a parish and village on the Cann stream, 7 ½ miles north-west from Chelmsford station on the Great Eastern railway, 8 ½ south from Dunmow and 9 north-east from Ongar, in the Mid division of the county, Dunmow hundred, Chelmsford union, petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Roding, archdeaconry of Essex and diocese of St. Albans. The church of St. Andrew is an ancient structure of rubble, in mixed styles, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, south aisle, south porch and a western tower with wooden spire 109 feet high and containing 5 bells, 3 of which replaced the old bells destroyed in the fire of 1885, and 2 more were added in 1892: there is a brass to Margaret, daughter of Edw. Brigg gent, and wife of Thomas Norrington, ob. 1610, and to her daughters: the church was restored in 1878 at a cost of £600, but having been partly destroyed by fire, March 22nd, 1885, was again restored in 1886 at a cost of £2,200, and has 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £195, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of St. Paul’s, and held since 1890 by the Rev. John Michael Giblin M.A. of St. Edmund Hall, Oxford. The manorial rights are divided. Mrs. W. J. Irving, W. H. Marriage and Sons, of Chelmsford, and Christopher Matthews esq. of Fouchers, are chief landowners. The soil is clay and marl; subsoil, white clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and beans. The area is 1,983 acres of land and 5 of water; rateable value, £2,080; the population in 1901 was 488 in the civil, and 534 in the ecclesiastical parish. Police Station, George Cleveland, constable in charge.

CHALK END is 1 mile south; Fambridge is half a mile south.

By Local Government Board Order 22,419, March 24, 1888, a detached part of Mashbury, known as Amours, was added to Good Easter, and detached parts of the latter added to the former parish by Order 22,423; on the same date a further detached part of the parish, known as Pinchers, was added to Margaret Roothing.

A School Board of 5 members was formed here 17 Dec. 1872; William W. Duffield, 96 High street, Chelmsford, clerk to the board.

Board School (mixed), erected in 1874, at a cost of about £1,200, for 100 children; average attendance, 67 mixed & 30 infants.
