Historical Description

Halstead, a large and populous town, seated upon the slope of a gravelly eminence, at the foot of which the river runs, and is crossed by a bridge at the southern side of the town. The name of Halstead is Saxon, and denotes a healthy place. Here is a good market which appears to have been established so early as the time of the Saxons, having for many centuries subsequent to the Conquest, been held upon a hill at the upper extremity of the town, which still retains the Saxon name of Cheping Hill.

At this place, in the reign of Edward III. a college was founded for a provost and eight priests, by Robert Bourehier, lord chancellor of England, which remained till the dissolution of religious houses. This village has a weekly market on Fridays, and is distant from London 46 miles.

The church is an ancient edifice, and has its tower surmounted by a wooden spire, which is the third that has been raised upon it: the second was at the expence of an apothecary of the name of Firk, in 1717; upon which occasion Prior wrote the following lines:

"View not this spire by measure giv’n

To buildings rais’d by common hands;

That fabric rises high as Heav’n

Whose basis on devotion stands.

While yet we draw this vital breath,

We can our hope and faith declare;

But charity beyond our death

Will ever in our works appear.

Blest be he call’d among good men,

Who to his God this column rais’d;

Tho’ lightning shake this spire again,

The man who built it shall be prais’d.

Yet spires and towers in dust shall lie,

The weak efforts of human pains;

And Faith and Hope themselves shall die,

While deathless Charity remains."

This spire, as Prior poetically foretold, shared the fate of its predecessor, and was destroyed by lightning. The church contains several curious monuments.

The population of this town is 3,380 inhabitants; the number of houses 784.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

HALSTEAD (or Halsted) is an ancient town and is the head of a union and county court district, pleasantly seated on a gentle acclivity on the river Colne and the roads from Colchester to Cambridge and Chelmsford to Sudbury, with a station on the Colne Valley and Halstead railway, and is 14 miles north-west from Colchester, 6 north-east from Braintree, 8 south-west from Sudbury, 15 south-east from Haverhill and 56 by rail or 47 by road from London: in the Eastern division of the county, Hinckford hundred, South Hinckford petty sessional division, rural deanery of Halstead, archdeaconry of Colchester, and diocese of St. Albans. The town was governed by a Local Board, formed Dec. 3, 1852, but is now under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. ch. 73), controlled by an Urban District Council of 12 members. In pursuance of sec. one (sub-section 3) of the previously mentioned Act, Halstead has been divided into two civil parishes, Urban and Rural; the Urban parish comprises a radius of about 1,000 yards from the town bridge and the Rural parish which surrounds this is controlled by a Parish Council of 7 members elected annually; the town was thoroughly drained in 1864—5, when waterworks were established, a good supply of pure water being obtained from an artesian well 300 feet deep and stored in a reservoir of red brick, constructed near the old works and capable of holding 84,000 gallons of water: a new well was sunk at Parson’s bridge in 1890, to a depth of 254 feet, and a pumping station built at a cost of about £8,000: the town is lighted with gas by a company whose works, erected in 1835, are in Rosemary lane. The church of St. Andrew, standing on the top of the hill on and around which the town stands, is a large building of flint with stone dressings, in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of six bays, aisles, north and south porches and a western tower with crocketed pinnacles, containing a clock with chimes and 6 bells dated 1573, 1589, 1633, 1700 and 1755: the east window is a memorial to Dr. Adams, a former vicar and there are others to James Brewster esq. who died in 1836 and to another of the same name, 1891, and to John Carmichael esq.; here is also a brass to the Rev. Arthur Charles Page M.A.: the chief feature of interest in the church is the eastern portion of the south aisle, which is of the Geometrical or Early Decorated period, and was formerly the Bourchier chapel; here several members of that family are buried, including Sir Robert de Bourchier, Chief Justice of the King’s Bench in Ireland in 1334 and Lord Chancellor of England 1340-41, ob. 1349, and Bartholomew his grandson, 3rd Baron Bourchier, ob. 1409, with brasses to himself and his two wives Margaret (Sutton) and Idonea (Lovey): there are two altar tombs with recumbent effigies of armed knights and their wives, supposed to belong to this family, one of the tombs being canopied; monuments to Edmund King, ob. 1624 and the Rev. John Manistre M.A. d. 1826 and a brass to Elizabeth, wife of John Watson, ob. 1604: in the north aisle are marble monuments to Sir Samuel Tryon kt. and baronet, ob. March 8, 1626; George Brooke and his wife, ob. 1770; James Scarlett, d. 1807; Elizabeth Holmes, spinster, d. 1783 and a brass to Samuel Fiske, d. 1718: the south aisle retains a piscina: in 1845 the church was restored and decorated at a cost of more than £5,000: in 1882 an organ chamber was built and a new organ erected at a cost of £850, and in 1893 a panelled reredos of oak and mahogany was erected from designs by Sir Arthur Blomfield kt. M.A., A.R.A., F.S.A.: there are sittings for 800 persons. The register dates from the year 1564. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £200, with 3 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Bishop of St. Albans, and held since 1899 by the Rev. Edwin Henry Oakley M.A. of Queens’ College, Cambridge. Holy Trinity is an ecclesiastical parish at, the west end of the town, formed June 3, 1844; the church is a structure of flint, with stone facings, in the Early English style, and consists of chancel, clerestoried nave of six bays, aisles, south porch and a western tower with spire containing one bell: there are eleven stained windows, the stained east window being the gift of the Rev. Frederick John Greenham M.A. vicar (1877—88), in memory of his wife, and the west window that of the Rev. Dancan Fraser, vicar 1845—77: in 1878 an organ chamber was built and the organ renovated at a cost of £400: there are 750 sittings. The register dates from the year 1844. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £230, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of St. Albans, and held since 1897 by the Rev. James Blyth Oldroyd M.A. of Dunham University. The vicarage house was rebuilt in 1893, the Ecclesiastical Commissioners giving £180 towards the cost. Population (Holy Trinity) in 1901, 2,899. There is a Catholic Mission Room in Rosemary lane.
